When a body is found on the beach, the residents of Evelyn Bay, Tasmania, are deeply shocked, but there is a sense of deja vu. It's a slow burn of a story rather than a suspense driven thriller with quite a few red herrings present as the tale unfolds.

She builds foreboding tension and suspense from the very start that keeps you captivated and hanging on until the very end. Their mother, who appears more attached to the family dog than to her sons, is especially given to fits of anger over small provocations, and Schulman depicts with disturbing accuracy the tension that pervades a childhood lived in such an atmosphere (one of his previous books told the story of his own relationship with his alcoholic mother). Evil doers who seem omniscient in that they know every ATM withdrawal the hero's wife makes but can't track the hero despite the fact he carries his cell phone switched on. This is the first novel I have read by Jane Harper, and she excels in creating a mystery with atmosphere galore. Nate now has to focus on keeping his family safe and not focus on his lack of will to live before it is too late.He was one of our greatest popular novelists, whose books are sold in thirty-three other languages, including Russian and Chinese. Jane worked as a print journalist for thirteen years both in Australia and the UK, and now lives in Melbourne. Now, twelve years later, with the dead woman found on the beach, many of the same people of long ago become suspects and/or accusers, as the town rumors run rampant, in person and on Evelyn Bay's social media. It clunks a bit in places and I can never work out the relevance of Tewson leaving his briefcase in the public bar but these are small grumbles in the face of such a beautifully eerie read. This is a strong characteristic of Harper’s writing and the cliché of being transported to a place seems so much more real at her hand.

It’s hard not to because you know how it ends and why it ends and it just doesn’t seem fair He flashes back to Nate’s biggest regret as a soldier and I really needed some tissue. Of course some of the situations seem unfathomable to the common person but it was not so over done that I rolled my eyes at absurdity. Forced to carry out hard labour in brutal conditions, and to live under the constant threat of extreme violence and sudden death, before the war was over Josef would witness the unique horrors of six of the most notorious Nazi concentration camps, including Auschwitz, Mauthausen and Ebensee. The community will be thrown into morning again with the discovery of a murdered young woman found on the beach.Gregg Hurwitz gives us such a serious story, not only with the robbery and murders, but with the attempted suicide because of a future Nate cannot face, and then adds humor in just the right places to make this an amazing read! If you don't overthink it you're bound to enjoy it well enough, but those looking to be blown away might be a little disappointed. The race is on as Nate attempts to keeps his family safe from Shevchenko, retrieve the item and outwit the authorities.

The weather, dark, dangerous, and edgy, plays a huge part in the storyline, unfurling secrets of its own. The authorities bring out big guns: Detective Pendlebury starts working with local police and as an outsider she can get more objective and fresher look to the things occurring in this small coastal town which help her connect with Bronte’s murder with three deaths from the past.JH is a master when it comes to creating believable settings that completely immerse you and she does that again in this. Kieran has been gone almost twelve years, since a bad decision on his part led to the death of his brother and friend during a violent storm. It’s all small signs and ciphers that if you’re clever enough you’ll spot (I of course came nowhere close! The only saving grace is that in the end poor Nate gets revenge and finds a way out that is satisfactory. The sense of place is good too - a ramshackle community clinging to the coast, windswept beaches, troubled seas, the scream of seabirds, jagged cliffs and deep caves carved into the rock . This book was no exception in that regard and it finished with a twisty, intense and unexpected ending which left me a satisfied reader. I must say that by the end I not only felt worn out, but was disappointed to have finished a great book. It's all jumbled together so there is the fun element of trying to untangle everything and come to your own conclusions.But fate has its own plans, when behind Nate's back, vicious thieves start shooting innocent bank tellers then turn their guns on a little four-yr old girl.
