Great performances from Michael Caine and Bob Hoskins, not so great from Richard Gere but a good supporting cast make this an enjoyable hour and three quarters entertainment. The one character who is neither confused nor mechanical is the honorary consul, played by Michael Caine in an outstanding per- formance. Visiting the town brothel with Saavedra, Plarr is attracted to a girl, Clara, but she is taken by another man. Plarr's mother, once a beauty and now bloated, along with some of his previous mistresses, attends his funeral. His English father remained in Paraguay as a political rebel and, aside from a single hand-delivered letter, they never hear from him again.

The two men try to persuade Plarr to help in a plot to kidnap the American ambassador, who is due to visit the district, and to exchange him for political prisoners held in Paraguay. The movie was filmed on location in Veracruz, Mexico and Mexico City, and at the Shepperton Studios in Surrey, England. Plarr is again summoned to the shack, this time to treat Fortnum for a gunshot wound sustained while trying to flee from a latrine. So many times his mother had used the word when he was a child; it was like the threat of an armed robber. Eduardo Plarr is an unmarried medical doctor of English descent who, as a boy, fled to Buenos Aires with his Paraguayan mother to escape the political turmoil of Paraguay.The Honorary Consul is a much more complicated, mysterious work than one might suspect from this rather literal if quite faithful condensation. On this level the movie succeeds, but there are too many loose ends in the plot and some lackluster performances.
