Although bandsaws are mainly used in woodworking, they also come in extremely useful in lumbering and metalworking. Band saws for metal cutting are rarely any different from other types; the main difference resides with the blade you use, you also need a much slower speed plus the correct blades, it’s able to handle and accurately cut the metal – whilst reducing waste and allowing for greater control.

As with most things there are different perspectives on how these should be set. Some people have the bearings touching, others don't, we tend to side with the latter and like them to be set around 0.5mm either side of the blade. Do not neglect the guides under the table! It’s often overlooked, but a critical step in setting up a bandsaw is adjusting the table parallel with the blade. If you don’t, you’re left with frustrating “drift,” which is nothing more than the fence, which is typically adjusted parallel to the miter slot, being skewed relative to the blade because the table isn’t set up correctly. Rips will be skewed and crosscutting with a miter gauge or sled will be choppy and inaccurate. Unlike the BS11 where the table is moved slightly, on the Startrite, it remains stationary. It’s the fence rail which is adjusted. It’s the work of a few moments to adjust the rail bolts (arrowed) at either end. Before adjusting your fence, refer to your particular bandsaw’s book of words.

To get blade tension just right, simply place your finger on the side of the blade inside the door and push toward the spine of the saw. You are looking for around 3/8" (9.5mm) deflection here with moderate pressure. If you're touching the spine with little pressure, the blade is under tensioned. Getting no deflection with a lot of pressure tells you that that blade is over tensioned.

The dust extraction is via two ports, one close to the bottom guides, the other in the lower wheel cabinet. An interconnecting hose means just one 63mm connection port needs coupling to a suitable vacuum extractor. There are twin blade speeds, giving flexibility for many jobs. Having sorted out the BS11, I then turned to my big Startrite and was again slightly surprised to see that the fence wasn’t parallel to the blade. Over the years, I’ve had several bandsaws in the workshop. To my mind, they’re one of the essential machines. I can quite easily do without a table saw, but a bandsaw is a ‘must have’. The first one I had was a French-made Euro 260. I bought it in the 90s from the original Axminster Tools shop on Chard Road. It did sterling duty in both my original ‘shop and the current one. But like all good things, it was getting a bit tired after nearly 20 years or so. It was replaced last January with one of our new Trade Series BS11 machines. Straightforward Setup You’re absolutely right; feet rate is crucial and you can cut a decent line with a blunt blade and horrendous things can start to happen if you get a little over enthusiastic when you’re shoving stuff through but having the fence dead parallel to the blade ensures that the cut doesn’t drift, blunt blade or new.
