The 20mm eyepiece did seem to create internal reflections, marring the narrow true field of view of just 0.9 degrees (the Full Moon’s angular diameter is just 0.5 degrees, for comparison). The 10mm eyepiece is perhaps the best of the two, but the eye relief on both is quite poor - you have to push your eyes right up into the eyepiece cup to see anything, making for uncomfortable viewing, and almost impossible viewing for spectacle wearers. The eq mount is heavy and not practical to use for a beginner. Thankfully I had the ressources to build a custom Dobsonian mount out of plywood, which greatly improved the observation experience. I totally agree with the comments at the beginning of the article. I encountered all the issues mentionned. I think this is better than the one other day, stars seem sharper, and more struture in the Nebula.

Celestron Astromaster 130 EQ used to come with a parabolic mirror in the early days. But now, it is shipped with spherical primary mirrors only. What would be a decent telescope in the same price range, or possibly a little more (to be decent, I guess)? Reply It seems to me, that a dobsonian may well be a better "family" scope, with the logic of adjusting an Alt Az mount being easier to understand than an EQ mount. When an optician figures a blank, they figure it into a sphere first, then they parabolise it. For spherical mirrors to be installed and sold, they stop at a sphere, and do not parabolise it. The curvature of a parabola is exotic compared to that of a sphere, and therefore more difficult to figure, and more costly as a result. You can remove your mirror and send it off to be parabolised. Who knows, it may already be a parabola, therefore you'd ask to have it tested beforehand. Or, you can replace it with a ready-made parabolic-mirror, then pop it into place once it arrives. Nothing will be changed, except the figure of the primary. You then collimate it, and off you go. When consulted, Celestron gives varying answers as to whether the AstroMaster 130 scopes are sold with spherical mirrors or not. One should not have to play the lottery to get a decent instrument with hundreds of dollars on the line, and Celestron should be able to give a concrete answer as to the nature of their product. This alone disqualifies the AstroMaster 130 from being a serious recommendation in our book.
