The central mystery was effective, although a few major clues were left lying in plain sight as our protagonists sauntered blithely by. A few of the twists caught me out, which is always a good sign. Sergeant Ben Savages character was amazingly well written too, I think it’s a testament to the writing that despite never seeing his family and only having (I believe) two instances of his home being described to us we know it so well. It really helped me feel a connection to the character. As in the previous two books, the action is unrelenting, the plot serpentine, and the language delicious . . .Spotswood will, I hope, continue to delight readers with these witty, sophisticated, and wildly entertaining mysteries for many years to come.”

Following a devastating encounter with a serial killer, Detective Inspector Freya Bloom is left mentally scarred. After a six-month sabbatical, and no desire to return to the bustling London streets, she accepts a position in rural Lincolnshire in search of a slower pace of life. The ending was a sweet one, yet kept the door open for more books in this series. Which I’m glad to hear! I’m certainly not done with reading this series yet! I can’t wait to begin reading the next one! I’m not sure if Dunbar should take it as a compliment that, even though we know what happened at the end of the first series, he remains a shifty presence – still suspicious, still not quite to be trusted. Fiona’s motor neurone disease is no longer a secret, but Paul is struggling with what appear to be money issues, and seems unable to support her as she needs to be supported, finding solace in a weepy stroke of a racehorse’s muzzle. Fiona meets her brother Michael in secret, and Michael isn’t talking to his father, after he tried to turn him against Cat in the first series. Cat is nowhere to be seen. It is not the sort of family reunion for which a sentimental ITV special would be made.

This one is certainly the most difficult to find in the game, and even its location is very confusing to figure out, so focus on this more than defeating the creature as you can leave the game once you've found the Golden Statue. From the moment Freya’s expensive heels hit Lincolnshire soil, the push-pull relationship with her Sergeant begins. Noses are put out of joint, tempers are frayed, and more importantly, a body is discovered on a wild beach. There’s no time to make friends. If Freya is to make her mark in this remote county, she must work with the team she’s been given, and untangle the web of lies surrounding the death of teenager, Jessica Hudson. A beautifully written and well constructed story based in the Fen Country, where an established detective is partnered with an inbound female detective.

I loved the mix of characters. The lead detectives had a tumultuous start, with one being new to the area and having brought a past issue, yet to be explored; the other slightly smitten and begrudgingly admired her skills, whilst interpreting her style and covering for her 'episodes'.
