While I cannot help but get a bit cynical every time someone claims to be the world's best in anything, I must say that I am, in fact, impressed at how fine the grain is on the Portra 400.If you're in a budget or if you take little to no time finishing a roll, spending €15 on a roll is quite a tough decision to make. It is the most popular film on the market today and a favourite choice for a huge amount of film photographers.

I think the Portra 400 has an incredible exposure latitude - it does well indoor under low exposure, and superbly outdoor under high exposure. Okay, you’ve chosen the right size film, you’ve loaded up your camera, set your light meter to 320 and you’re ready to go.Maybe you’re using that harsh light to your advantage, or you use a giant window to soften the light. This film is sometimes thought of as boring as it renders colours, especially skin tones in a neutral and accurate way. By setting my light meter to 320 ISO it helps me stay more in the green box below, erring on the side of overexposure, which film can handle a lot better than being underexposed (see the left muddy size of the chart below). Yes, the images have fine grain, but with the tone, color balance and contrast that the Portra 400 produce, it is nearly impossible for the images to come out lacking characteristics.
