The story follows Lizzie who has a troubled past, from being abandoned at a church as a newborn, growing up in care through to an incident in her work life she’d rather leave in the past. Once the medium expels this Ectoplasm from their body, the ghost will then place the gauze, slime, or cheesecloth over themselves to be seen by whoever is summoning them. These ghosts are seen when a medium is trying to manifest a ghost and then expels the substance from their body. There’s some discussion that the different ghosts are simply from different stages of development in the afterlife. For this theory, their strengths depend on that stage. Ghosts almost always have unfinished business that they need to take care of. This unfinished business is usually quite innocent. It can be used as a way to avoid the fact that they died.

Usually, a ghost will behave the same way they did when they were alive. If they were kind, they will still be kind. If they were mean, you probably don’t want them in your home. Their Death & Unfinished Business Fortunately, unlike an Orb, a poltergeist is a fairly rare type of ghost. We don’t hear about them very often. I didn't enjoy this standalone novel as much as the other Ann Cleeves books I've read that are part of different detective series. This is the first time I have listened to Ann Cleeves in audiobook form and I am unsure if this is also a factor in my level of enjoyment. I prefer to read her in print. However, there’s always the other end of the spectrum where that unfinished business can become very dark and sinister.

However, they’re still not an accepted form of a ghost in the world of science. This is because many have been proven to be hoaxed, made of gauze and other similar substances. Demons Orbs don’t appear to be evil. They’ve never been associated with hauntings. From what we know so far, they can’t touch you, speak to you, move things, change temperature, or reach out in any way. I am highly impressed by Ann Cleeves’s stories about inspector Vera. But I was clearly disappointed with her “Burial of ghosts” book. I love Anne Cleeves Shetland books but I wasn't really in the market for starting on the 'Vera' books so this stand alone book was just what I was after. There are a few different types and different paranormal entities that a ghost can be confused with.
