Whilst reading a shoe trade magazine a member of the Griggs family, who were established in 1901 and well known for and had a solid reputation as makers of sturdy, durable work boots, noticed an advert for a revolutionary air-cushioned sole. Doc Martens’ simple outline allows wearers to adapt the boots and shoes to their own individual and individual style. Whilst on a practical level, their famous durability and comfort make them ideal in the world of gigs and street fashion.Doc Martens have been the choice of footwear among various groups in British culture from the 1960s through the 1980s and continue their popularity amongst the younger generations. Owning your own pair of Dr. Martens Safety Boots (Doctor Martens, Doc Martens, Docs or DMs - call them as you will) is being part of the iconic look.

In an ever changing world dominated by social media and instant communications worldwide styles continue to change. How they make Dr Martens:Dr. Martens have an internal stitch, or plain welt. This welt reinforces the strength of the shoe yet again. Where you see the external yellow stitch (such as on this Dr Martens safety Waterproof rigger boot), it is housed in a vat of warm wax which makes it supple - but also ensures that any holes made by the needle as it makes its way around the edge of the boot will not allow water into the shoe. Dr Martens Safety Boots and Safety Footwear was initially very popular among workers such as postmen, police officers and factory workers. Taking its name from the date of its inception, April 1st, 1960, the eight-holed 1460 Dr Martens boot had arrived.Doc Martens or Docs are distinguished by air-cushioned soles, unique upper shape, welted construction and yellow stitching. An exclusive license was acquired by the Griggs family and a few key changes made, including an altered heel, a bulbous but simple upper, a distinctive yellow welt stitch, a two tone grooved sole edge and a unique sole pattern.

The new sole was a result of a collaboration in Germany between Dr Klaus Maertens and Dr Herbert Funk who went into partnership in post war 1945 making footwear with a unique air-cushioned sole. The 1980s began a trend for girls buying then customising (usually with florals) the simple 8-hole boot. The PVC Goodyear Welt:- the strip of PVC that carries the distinctive yellow thread is skillfully stitched by a machinist onto the upper, using the yellow thread and a welt sewing machine. The Dr. Martens air cushion sole itself - as seen on the DM Forge 6637 model - is produced in the factory, using a granular compound which is first melted, then injected into a mould which carries the distinctive DMs sole pattern. After the soles have cooled, a felt strip is inserted into the cavity of the insole, followed by a soft comfort pad, both of which are inserted by hand. The sole is then positioned against the upper, briefly joined at the toe and heel by “spotting” - wherein a hot blade is put between the welt and the sole to join them together. Could this appeal be the DMs be due to its uniqueness and individuality when everything is made to look the same? I think very likely!
