Lakeview House by Helen Phifer, is a new thriller that will be published April 8th. This is one of my favorite suspense authors. I was absolutely over the moon to get to review her new book. Did it live up to the hype? And then, strange things start happening. Things that go bump in the night; whispers and music emanating from downstairs; a sodden wedding dress left on her doorstep; vivid dreams that are all too real that tell her something sinister happened in this very house. And then she meets Alfie, a teenager with an innocent demeanour who is younger than his years, who alludes to something called "the lake people". But as the days turn into nights, Maddy begins to question her decision to cut herself off in the middle of nowhere with no phone reception or help nearby, should something happen to her. Especially when it becomes clear that someone is trying to frighten her. But who? She doesn't know anyone really. She has only met sexy Seth, kooky Glenys and her adorable son Alfie. And Stella is the only one who knows where she is. Even Connor doesn't know...or does he? Maddy Hart needs a fresh start. She's running from an abusive relationship. She's on a deadline with her publisher. She just needs to get away. Lakeview House did not have listed building protection, or conservation area protection, but it was protected by condition of approval. Lakeview House was one of those stories that intrigued me from the outset, but it didn’t deliver in the way I hoped. Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate. Residents living with dementia live in an environment that merges the look of a high-quality hotel with a homely feel and compensates for cognitive difficulties The plot was really good, and although it seemed straight-forward, it wasn't. I loved Maddy, and her friend Stella. Although Stella's actions left a lot to be desired, she was still a friend. Glynnis and her son were just as entertaining. All the characters were a little quirky, well thought out. I didn’t know what to make of some of the characters though. Maddy is escaping her violent ex Connor, so taking on a caretaker role in the Lake District hundreds of miles away made sense. I think she was the only character I liked. I didn’t necessarily dislike the others although Connor was clearly scum so I won’t spare him another word, and Maddy’s alleged best friend Stella proves to be a bad friend at best, and at worst she withheld information putting Maddy’s life in danger. Nobody felt superfluous, and they were all three dimensional, although one or two stretched credibility. My “suspension of disbelief” did take a mild battering.
