I really struggled to find any major downsides to this rake, it even comes with a 2 year warranty if you register the rake with Bosch. Electric corded scarifiers: Lightweight, quiet and often at the budget-end, this type of scarifier is best suited to small and medium-sized gardens with a power supply. Most models come with a collection box, which is a useful, time-saving feature, but the cord length can be restrictive as well as potentially hazardous. Manual Rolling Drum Aerators – these are time and labour saving, as you simply walk across the lawn pushing the roller The collection box on the Bosch attaches to the rear of the rake (like a lawn mower), this is the reason Bosch can achieve such a large collection box. The Flymo’s collection box is more integral to the rake, reducing the capacity. The advantage for the Flymo is smaller overall dimensions and the disadvantage is the relatively small collection storage. It lets you choose to rake from anywhere between +10/+5/0/-5 mm with 4 separate raking heights. Just make sure you don’t set it at the shortest setting from the start when the lawn has significant growth, instead start at a much higher setting and gradually work your way down. This will help prevent scalping of your lawn.

The cutting heights on offer are also pretty good. You can set it to scarify below the surface, as deep as -5mm, or just collect surface debris with the tines at +10mm high. No matter what you have it set to, this scarifier does a great job removing thatch and other garden debris such as fallen leaves.

As you’d expect from Bosch, this is a pretty sturdy scarifier – it comes with a 2-year warranty for peace of mind when buying. However, the grass collection box is a little flimsy. The machine is also so easy to use, it’s lightweight at just under 10 kg making it simple to manage. The extra features like the Bosch Powerdrive and the ‘Jet Collect’ system are not just nice to have features but features that improve the performance of the lawn rake and make that job that little bit easier, besides you want features that will help achieve a lovely looking lawn with least amount of work and effort. As the name suggests, aeration involves poking plenty of holes into the soil all over your lawn. This is done to allow fertilizers, water, and air to penetrate more easily through the thatch and into the soil where they can all be easily absorbed into the root system. Aeration is most commonly done early on in the spring or fall when the lawns are still as not heavily compacted.

If you have a very small lawn, or are on a limited budget, this hand held scarifier is probably a better choice. However, where this machine falls short is with its aerating function. Unlike the other aerators I’ve used, this one doesn’t seem to actually aerate. Instead, the aerator roller does pretty much the same thing as the scarifier, except it’s much more severe. Remember all of that healthy grass I just mentioned that the scarifier left intact? Well, the aerator pretty much destroyed it all.Does this make it more practical than it’s closest competition? well, yes I think it does for people with smaller lawns and limited space for storage with the ability to get the job done without emptying the collection box as often. There is also a very handy and well positioned central handle that makes carrying the almost 10 kg rake to the garage or shed very easy. However, if you have a larger lawn, you’ll want a wider cutting width, of 35-40cm or more, to make scarifying a more efficient process. Is a lawn rake the same as a scarifier? As you can see, measuring the rakers on a chainsaw is not difficult–regardless of the brand. In fact, the process is very similar, except for a few minor details.
