However, game play would undoubtedly be improved with more players, and therefore allied forces, due to increased complexity in strategies employed. In most instances, I found that as the game drew to a close if it was clear that only one or two Escape Officers had a chance of winning everybody else would ditch their own attempts to escape in favor or helping those players. Included for extra atmospheric flavour are replicas of objects from the prison, such as a German newspaper front page announcing the escape, and a 32-page history booklet.

The prisoner starts from anywhere inside the grey area of the board (the inner courtyard) and must reach one of the safe targets outside of the castle walls within the number of throws specified.Everything in this beautiful game instantly establishes a feeling that you’re about to step back in time, and the elements of secrecy and discovery are as much a part of the packaging as the game itself. While the Allied players got to run around the castle hoping to nick the stall car, collecting skeleton keys and wire cutters and hoarding Red Cross cigarettes with which to bribe the guards, the German player just marched around with his dogs hoping to fall into a tunnel.

Once again, the fluidity of this game's rules and intentions, both in its original and this most recent edition, can be seen in the winning conditions. Rules are found within a four page A4 instruction booklet/escape manual, entitled “To all Prisoners of War! And then there’s the fact that timing your own escape while another player tries to execute their plan will provide the distraction you need, although the Security Officer does have a lot of guards at his or her disposal so they can split forces. To be honest, the basic nature of the game is rolling two dice, moving your pieces around to collect all the necessary cards to attempt an escape, sometimes cooperating with the other Escape Officers, sometimes not, all the while being repeatedly frustrated by the German Security Officer player's actions and card play. In fact you could even play it as a co-operative game from the start, although I imagine whoever is playing as the German’s would not be very appreciative of that choice.E]scaping from Colditz Castle… may reveal aspects of your nature which you did not dream you possessed, as so often it did to the men imprisoned there… To play the game successfully requires both ingenuity and patience, as well as experience based on failure, and nerve and dash at the crucial moment. Today, it's still almost identical, we are told that the game ends either after 50 turns [not forgetting that, by player agreement, you can end the game after 40 rounds or any other number of turns chosen! If the player rolls a 3, 7 or 11, the player takes an "Escape Opportunity" card (Escape Officer) or "Security Opportunity" card (Security Officer). With that done you simply announce that you’re making the item, take the appropriate card and then put both POWs back into the appel. Arresting as many prisoners as possible after they have filched equipment puts them in solitary confinement for a period of time, reducing the POWs available to the Escape Officers.

There’s also fences where wire cutters will make a handy-dandy exit, presumably in a humorous human shape.Remember, this is a remastering of an old classic, so with that in mind – this is a roll and move game.
