When council representatives come to confiscate Rory Cummel’s property, they tell him they are only doing the will of Nollop and that “There is no other Supreme Being but Nollop” [p. 121]. Seen in light of recent events, in the Middle East and elsewhere, can the novel be read as a commentary on religious authoritarianism? What does the novel suggest about the dangers of humans assuming they know God’s will with absolute certainty? If that all sounds very meta, it is. Written in 2001, Ella Minnow Pea has become somewhat of a modern classic given the novelty of its structure along with its not-so-subtle themes of totalitarianism, censorship, and freedom of speech. You see, the fictional island’s government bans the use of various letters and inflicts punishment on citizens for each infraction. Dr. Mannheim is a professor at the local university. He plays a vital role in the attempt to find a pangram that fits the qualifications set by the council (also known as Enterprise 32). He and Tom, his assistant, lead the way in finding a sentence. He manages to create a sentence that is 37 letters in length, but his quest for a 32-letter sentence is ended abruptly when he refuses banishment and is shot and killed by island officials. The farce in Ella Minnow Pea is comparable to George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Indeed both books take similar themes, for example utopia Vs. dystopia, or being a good citizen Vs. being a moral person. These are questions still very much relevant today, particularly the plight of Nollop citizens. Do they stay in their homes, where they were born and raised, despite the absurdity of the laws and the threat to their lives? Or should they leave friends and family behind for safety? To teachers we suggest also that this is an ideal text for school-reading -- students can learn from both the method and the message (plus it's just plain good fun).)

For story, character, plot and reality lovers, however, the story isn't quite as accomplished. The author's not very subtle dig at organized religion as a vehicle for the blindly obedient to carry out the wishes of non-existent tyrannical beings got on my nerves. Likewise, the characters were so poorly developed that I was never quite sure who the letters were being written by or to whom they were being sent. On the 24th of July, Tassie responds to Ella letting her know that their librarian that with this new law, all books with the letter ‘Z’ will also be prohibited. And then it is the bees must go, as their language is a relentless zzzzzz. Then it is a young man, Master William Creevy, who ’doesn’t believe in obeying laws made by madmen’ is now one step away from being banished. People are being killed and burnt alive because of these lies.
