Devil’s Den (allegedly) got its name from early settlers, who stumbled upon the spring on a cold winter day in the early 1800’s. They noticed steam— or, at least what they thought was steam— rising from a hole in the ground. Plants grew, and animals lived on the dry land. Plants and animals died, leaving organic soil.When rain fell, it mixed with the organic soil. The water became acidic, and ate away at soft limestone layers. Caves, springs, underground rivers formed.
