Unless something unbelievable happens in the next 40 pages (which given the pace so far would be shocking indeed), I'm not sure he's going to redeem himself. Born at Silver Islet on July 25, 1888, only four years after the closing of the mine, his destiny and the future of many others was inevitably associated with mining. The latter is more bearable, but also more dangerous because it manifests itself in ways that are not at first definable as such. Even if I didn't like the plot that much, the writing is still flawless and if I could have I would have read the book in one sitting. Alison’s blank diary is also on the desk, and Alison says that her “earnest diary entries had given way to the implicit lie of the blank page” (Bechdel 186), and the use of the word ‘earnest’ again draws the attention to the play and the way Alison fights to connect with her mother through art.
