What’s the Story? In between Thief and Manhunter, Michael Mann directed this dreamlike historical-horror oddity. During World War II, German soldiers unearth a dangerously powerful entity in a castle in Romania (specifically pegged as a Golem in the film but not in F. Paul Wilson’s original novel), who is understandably furious about the Nazis’ treatment of the Jews. Mysterious, sorcerous stranger Glaeken Trismegestus (Scott Glenn) arrives to save the day with a light show. Initially, there’s little about The Colour Room to catch the eye. The story of 1920’s ceramic artist, Clarice Cliff, who turned out to be something of a trailblazer and, for those who know next to nothing about the industry (probably most of us), the title doesn’t give much of a clue. But the one thing that will catch your attention is the name at the top of the cast list. Phoebe Dynevor, from the huge Netflix hit, Bridgerton. And she makes this, her first feature film, very much her own. Plenty of films have yet to make the hi-res journey to Blu-ray, but there are hundreds that never even made it to DVD. Empire has been digging, and we've exhumed these 25 movies never officially pressed onto a small, silver disc... to date. If you feel inclined, suggest your own lost treasures in the comments. Clarice lives at home in a two-up two-down with her mum and sister. Every second of her spare time she paints: art deco-inspired patterns on china in sunshiny bright bursts of colour. Old duffers in the industry mansplain why women won’t buy her cheap and cheerful pottery (“you’ll find the modern woman has a more refined taste”). But Clarice knows exactly what women want (her Bizarre collection eventually sold more than 8.5m pieces). The film catches the excitement of this moment for Clarice, and Dynevor’s performance is wonderful.

We didn't bother with Tales From the Quadead Zone, for example... It is no surprise that Peate was keen to write this biopic, as Cliff is an inspiring figure in many ways. She became a star in her field at a time when it was exceptionally difficult for a woman to get ahead, and she had trailblazing ideas. She also played a significant role in revolutionising how pieces are sold by moving them out of the art fairs and galleries and taking them straight to the target customers. For a film essentially about art, it inevitably has a strong visual appeal. The grime, dirt and danger of The Potteries is re-created to the extent that you can almost taste the dirt in your mouth right from the outset. And the smokiness of factories seeps into the interiors, especially the cramped houses where the workers, including Cliff’s family, live. Set against that as a living bolt of colour is the woman herself. It starts with a vibrant scarf and, as the film continues, extends into more of her clothes, as well as the glowing warmth of the paint she uses on her creations. As a woman she stands out as well, unconventional, deliberately wearing her hair in a bob and letting nothing, but nothing, stand in the way of her ambitions.

What’s the story? ***Whale was best known for his Universal horrors (Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, The Old Dark House), but he intended this sequel to All Quiet On The Western Front to be the crowning glory of his career. Its story sees the soldiers of the 2nd Company returning home and struggling to readjust to civilian life after the horrors of World War I. But its anti-war and anti-German stance made Universal nervous, and it was drastically cut to dull its message. Whale later cited it as the worst job he ever had. Coming from a working class family in Stoke On Trent, the best Clarice could hope for was a job in one of The Potteries’ factories, despite her obvious talent for design and colour. Being creative and developing new ceramics collections was very much a man’s job and it was only when her ideas caught the attention of factory owner, Colley Shorter ( Matthew Goode) that she was able to join his team of designers. It wasn’t plain sailing, though: as the only woman among them, she was kept out of meetings and decision making and had her ideas constantly dismissed. Her first collection, Bizarre, with its strong shapes and bold colours, didn’t go to plan but, undeterred, she found a way to bring it to the attention of female customers and went on not only to save the factory during the Depression of the thirties, but take ceramics in a whole new direction.
