Once your pond starts to look great again, it can be tempting to stop treatment. It feels like the issues have been solved. This is where most people go wrong. The key is to treat your pond as much as possible, and keep using the treatments and adding those good bacteria long after you appear to have solved the problem. Pond sludge, or pond silt, is the collection of organic debris on the bottom of your pond which slowly decomposes over time. Any organic matter that falls into your pond, such as leaves, will eventually become waterlogged, sink, and will gradually contribute to bottom sludge. As pond sludge decomposes, harmful substances are released into the water which your beneficial bacteria population works to breakdown. The latter might be particularly useful to you since you have a large pond, and these plants are considered “deep growers.” The sludge then further contributes to more algae growing as there aren’t the right bacteria to break them down. Eventually, pond plants and even your pond fish can suffer. They may even die if you get too much sludge. It isn’t worth taking the risk. Sludge removers are an effective way to get rid of this sludge and replace the “good bacteria” that you need for the ecosystem within your pond. Note: If you notice your pond filters getting clogged faster during Pond Sludge treatments, it means the treatments are working! As the bacteria break down sludge it will get trapped in your filter system. You should clean your pond filter more regularly (2-3 days) during a sludge treatment. Also, turn OFF any UV clarifiers as these will kill sludge remover bacteria. Does the sludge remover have any extra features? This is especially important after heavy water changes or when adding a new filter to a pond as beneficial bacteria cultures will be reduced. Beneficial bacteria is not harmful to fish, and can be dosed year round, so is a safe and effective preventive long term measure. The bacteria that works to break down the pond sludge will not be able to actively work in colder temperatures, so it’s recommended to dose with bacterial pond sludge remover during the end of Spring or start of Summer for the best results.
