I love the fact Jacqueline Wilson included circus's, mediator's and freak show's into this series! I love them all and it is a great contrast compared to the foundling hospital and 19C London landscape. Bertie: The Butcher's boy and possible love interest for Hetty. Prior to the story, Bertie accidentally sliced of the top of three of his fingers on his left hand and was also in a workhouse at some point. After Hetty leaves Kingtown, he becomes taken with Mr. Buchanan's new servant, Rose-May, telling her he'd make a tippet out of rabbit skins for her. Bertie is constantly known for flirting with girls, including Hetty, Rose-May, and the two girls from the draper's shop. Hetty's new life is soon shattered when she accuses Mr. Buchanan of plagiarising her work after she finds a poorly written manuscript of her memoir in his office under the name Emerald Greenwich. Hetty is immediately fired. Before she leaves, Sarah gives Hetty her suitcase and Mrs. Briskett gives her a jar full of money as well as some food to take with her. Hetty goes to see Bertie for the last time before setting off to Bignor to be with her mother. Mr. Fanservice: In-Universe example. She cares deeply for those she loves and tries her best to be kind, but is often narcissistic and self-centered. She unintentionally hurts those around her, particularly her foster brother Jem as we see later on in the series. Although the love is mostly unrequited, there is some evidence to show that Hetty may have returned his feelings, particularly her strong reaction to Jem's marriage and discomfort at seeing Jem and Janet's life together in a vision. Even though this book wouldn't be really categorised as a Romance. I found both Bertie and Jem's relationships with Hetty so cute! I do hope none of them are just playing her and making it seem like they both like her. I can't wait to see what is going to happen in the next book! I started this in my lunch break today, I had the evening in so when I got home from work I sat down to continue and read for just an hour, well 2 hours later I had finished the entire book. I just couldn't make myself put it down. I was swept up in Hetty's world and couldn't leave. When things go wrong she is on her own again, her life is a confusion and she must deal with conflicted love, loss and self discovery.I really enjoyed the book, because it was so different to all of Jacqueline's other books. Sapphire Battersea is what I would classify as historical fiction at its best. It's not girly, and not for the faint-hearted. It is quite dark at some points, and a really gripping and poignant book. Every chapter was very exciting, especially because at the beginning of the chapter there were a couple of shadows, showing what was going to happen in the chapter, which added to the book. Although older than the target market, I really liked this book. Hetty Feather/Sapphire Battersby is a really lovely character who is always up to mischief. This novel follows her journey after leaving the Foundling Hospital where she was left by her mother as a child. Sapphire Battersea is all about what comes next for Hetty. Hetty's life is never going to be without adventure, mischief and mayhem. Here is what the book is really about... In addition, Hetty keeps making the same constant mistake of letting her nostalgia and idolisation of people/certain places cloud her rationality and judgement. Sampe bela2in baca ampe tengah fajar... walaupun tebel, ga berasa... saking serunya :) Madame Berenice & Emily - A medium who holds séances. Hetty finds out that she and her sister, Emily, are frauds. Madame Berenice pretends to be possessed by the dead while Emily covers herself in a white veil, pretending to be a ghost.

Seems to constantly have to re-learn that it's not worth pursuing fame and fortune in place of happiness and peace. Hetty even lampshades this. I think the characters in this book were excellently written, and I felt Hetty next to me, telling me about all the strange things and scary or funny happenings in her life. I felt Bertie telling me jokes, and Hetty raising her eyebrows. In the kitchen, Hetty meets Mr. Buchanan's new servant girl, Rose-May, who reveals that Bertie is now taken with her. Upon hearing this, Hetty runs to the outhouse and vomits. While lamenting the fact that she's truly an orphan now, she hears Ida's voice informing her that she isn't an orphan - her father is still alive. The book ends with Hetty declaring "I am Sapphire Battersea", with the intent to seek out her father. Jem Cotton - Hetty's older foster brother. He waits for her outside the Hospital on the day she leaves but she is unable to converse with him. The two of them continue to communicate through letters.

When I realised that this novel was the second part of a trilogy I was a little concerned that, having not read any Wilson before and therefore not having read the first novel, I would be a little lost. However, that was not the case at all. Wilson appears to have developed the characters in this novel completely independently of the first book so you can easily read it as a stand alone. She also finds a potential love interest in Bertie, the local butcher's boy, who takes her out to the fair, on a boat ride, and for a walk in the park. Hetty also accompanies the parlour maid, Sarah, to a séance with the medium Madame Berenice. During the séance, a ghost of Hetty's long-dead foster brother, Saul, appears before Hetty. This frightens her. Hetty originally plans to become a writer but learns to love performing in the circus and on stage. Her search for identity, both as an individual and as part of a family, is what primarily characterises the book series. I read Hetty Feather last week after a recommendation from one of the girls at my Diving group. She also told me to read Sapphire Battersea, but at the time I didn't realise they were connected. When I finished Hetty Feather I was disappointed that the story hadn't finished but then I looked up this one and found it was the second one in what will be a trilogy, so of course I had to request it to read.
