A honey-comb embossed slip resistant 20D polyester is used for the top of the mat and the base is made from standard 20D polyester, both fabrics have a TPU Polyether film laminate to prevent air loss and stop water ingress.The top fabric has also been coated with Exped's GripSkin coating, which, as you would expect, grips your skin to minimise the amount you slide around in the night. The Exped SynMat 7 Long Wide is a supremely comfortable, warm and durable sleep mat from the Swiss masters of techy stuff. The SynMat 7 LW is not just for winter, it works equally well all year round for people who feel the cold. Offering increased levels of insulation over standard self-inflating mats the Exped Synmat 7LW sleeping mat has the same makeup as the ever popular Downmats, only microfibre fill replaces down in each chamber. We first tried the small foam Exped Mini Pump. This is just like a big round sponge that you connect with a small hose and repeatedly squash the air out of to inflate the mat. It’s simple and easy to use but takes a long time to inflate fully. It can be quite frustrating, hunching over the pump for five minutes unable to make it work any faster as you have to wait for the sponge to refill after each compression.A proper cold-weather sleeping mat is essential if you want to go camping in winter. Those cheap, thin roll mats made of foam just won’t cut it when the ground is really cold beneath your tent – however warm your sleeping bag is, you’ll end up shivering if you don’t have a layer of air between you and the groundsheet. But of course you don’t want to be lugging some bulky lilo around either. Which is why something like the Exped Synmat UL 7 is ideal.

The Exped SynMat HL (Hyperlite) LW (Long & Wide), is the world's lightest sleeping mat for its warmth and comfort levels! We have used our Synmat 7 UL air pad for nine months of camping at the side of the road, in car parks, garages, spare rooms, storage rooms, bed rooms and park benches.We protect ours with a very thin (2mm) foam sleeping pad underneath. We had one slow puncture in Iran, six months into the trip, that was fixed with the puncture repair kit included with every mat. I just had to put some glue on, let it dry, and repeat twice. I’ve had no problems since. Lightweight Exped models have two separate valves: a green inflation valve and a red deflation valve. This gives you a variety of options for inflation. Sleeping Size of the Exped Synmat ULInflation is simple using the integrated hand pump that is a doddle to use and has an ingenious method to adjust the firmness (watch the video). Separate inflation and deflation Flat Valves sit nice and flat against the face fabric so they are far less susceptible to damage. The hand pump is fast and efficient and far easier than blowing up the mat yourself with the added advantage of not introducing moisture into the mat that could freeze and dramatically reduce the mats performance. If you’re not familiar with the SynMat family of inflatable sleeping mats by Exped, the main thing to know about them is that they make for very useful lightweight and comfortable options for cold weather camping. That’s all thanks to their unique construction where lightweight synthetic fibres are laminated to the walls of the inside to protect you when you’re lying on cold ground. Ultralight kit tends to be more expensive than its regular counterparts but, in this instance, the Synmat UL is actually cheaper. That’s presumably because the weight saving is achieved by using a much thinner material which makes it look and feel much more fragile. While the integrated pump was nice, we found it more difficult to fine tune the inflation level than other pads. Deflation, however, is as simple as pulling a tab that releases all the air. Unfortunately, there is no way to let the air ease out - this valve is all or nothing. The Sea to Summit Ultralight and Sea to Summit Comfort Light have a similar valve to the SynMat but they both have a small release valve that you can use to fine-tune the inflation while you're on the pad (this is especially key for making adjustments in the middle of the night without waking up your partner).
