Kepler never holds back when it comes to the gore, but this book especially was 😳😳😳 Definitely not for the faint of heart but we love to see it ! Overall, this was an intense, dark, and gritty story with complex characters that kept me turning the pages.

In fact, it's a great book, four stars just because giving a five to a detective about a maniac (if it's not "The Silence of the Lambs") is nonsense. This is the 8th book in the Joona Linna series by the husband and wife authors who go by the pseudonym of Lars Kepler.Some of their books read quicker than others, and this one definitely aligns more with the pacing of a psychological thriller. Having said all that I wouldn't say no to reading more of the series so clearly the book did work for me despite my concerns. I am fussy about technique and writing style so will tire quickly of poorly written drivel no matter how compelling the story. But if an author does not take any risks at all, they also run the risk of losing readers as they will not see a reason to read new entries.

The internal dialogues and the narrative pulls readers into the inner world of the characters making us unsettled, distressed, and thankful that Joona has the tenacity to keep investigating. Detective Joona Linna gets involved and when another girl goes missing, he fears a killer is escalating his activities.With the release of The Mirror Man in English earlier this year, this series is now eight novels deep and still going strong. Crime thriller fans who enjoy a detailed, twisty tale can expect a treat when they reach for this title. Er zitten weer behoorlijk wat gruwelijke en harde stukken in (onder andere over de verdwenen meisjes).

I thought the ending was really well done and I could feel the emotions the characters were going through as Lars Kepler wraps the story up.

I was gripped more by the first two chapters of this book than the entirety of the last three books i have. The Mirror Man" is dark Scandi-noir with a side of masochism, slavery, drugs, brutality, torture, neo-Nazism kidnapping and people trafficing. A young girl is kidnapped in plain sight and taken into custody, where she is locked away with a number of others. We see this part of the novel through the eyes of the young woman who has been taken, and Lars Kepler does a brilliant job of getting inside her head, as we experience the emotions and the fear that she is experiencing.

While Linna and the Swedish police begin trying to piece things together, Mia and her fellow captives are thrust into a world of torture and pain at the hands of a heinous woman. The images in particular from an underground fighting / betting meet were so warped that I frankly decided I just didn’t need this my head. This wouldn't have bothered me as much if it hadn't been for over-the-top graphic violence verging on torture porn that associates mental health issues with appalling violence and abuse. Die Idee dahinter hätte wirklich interessant sein können, aber bei der Umsetzung hat es meiner Ansicht nach gehapert.And as much as I loved that murderer/villain I’m not sure I want them to come back for another book.
