On 31st October 1964 DOCTOR WHO began transmitting its 2nd series, and during 38 weekly episodes (comprising 9 serials) which came to an end on 24th July 1965 it would attain a level of popularity and ratings that the show would not see again until around the first three years of Tom Baker's tenure in the mid 1970's. But when I went back to this series, I immediately saw why Tennant nailed the doctor in a way that no one else has - zany. In the UK, the initial Collector's Edition releases of each Collection set would sell out almost immediately, resulting in a high resale value. There are galleries and… well, reconstructions of the second and fourth episodes of the story which have been lost. million viewers, the highest in the series to date; it maintained high viewership across the six weeks.

It represents a period of a show that might be showing its age and be a little less loved nearly 60 years on, but at the time, it was a massive hit.

Derek Francis plays the Emperor Nero as a selfishly entitled schoolboy with a sadistic streak and is certainly memorable whether or not one appreciates the jokes. It gives us a healthy dose of Daleks, an insane scheme on their part, a true feeling of hopelessness, then victory (and even romance).

Here's hoping for Pat Troughton's final season as that is mostly complete apart from The Space Pirates and I'm sure there is something that can be done about this.
