So to sum it up, in a price range of under 10k this is a good choice, great choice even, if you have a specific taste in music genres like i mentioned above. It’s been ten years since Marshall released its first pair of headphones, the Marshall Major. Over the course of the decade, the Major series has dropped its 3.5mm cable in favour of a Bluetooth connection, but the basic premise remains unchanged: on-ear headphones created to reflect the renowned guitar amp manufacturer’s heritage.

That pair replaced, I find the Marshall Major III fairly comfortable. Like any on-ear headphones, you may find they cause slight ear fatigue if worn all day. However, the designers have done their best to ensure a balance between comfort and sufficient tension to keep the headphones on your head while on a run.

Why is Marshall Major IV better than Marshall Major III Bluetooth?

Pair the headphones to your phone and you’ll see an extra notification pop up, to let you connect them to your Google Assistant profile. These headphones don’t need Wi-Fi to make this work; it all happens over Bluetooth. Controls are equally simple to navigate. Marshall has taken a “less is more” approach, and I can’t fault the execution. A single multidirectional knob on the right earpad handles all of your key commands. Pressing and holding the knob powers the Major IV on or off, with a single press playing or pausing audio. The little gold dots where the headband meets the cup spokes are based on Marshall’s iconic volume knobs – and, of course, there’s no missing that logo. Presumably, Marshall used its previous mid-range approach to emphasise crunchy guitars. But it also had a tendency to make some vocal sound a little cold or nasal, which doesn’t make for the most engaging listen.

Unfortunately, connecting the cable doesn't power down the headphones automatically. That only occurs when the other end of the cable connects to your mobile device, and in that case, it's the mobile device ending the connection. If you're paired with a phone and connect one end of the cable to the headphones and leave the other loose, audio will still stream to your headphones from your paired device. It's not a huge issue, but you'll have to be certain your headphones are powered down, or you can easily drain your battery without realizing it. On the positive side, we didn't detect a major difference in audio performance between active wired and passive wired listening.While the company often earns the most attention for its professional amplifier products, it also produces a range of consumer-grade products too. New to this generation of the Marshall Major III headphones is support for Google Assistant – simply press a dedicated button on the outer right earcup to summon the voice assistant on your device. Hier zählt nur der Klang. Möglichst authentisch, wie im Studio geplant, möglichst weites Hörfeld für ein maximales „Mittendrin-Abtauch“-Gefühl. Nebengeräusche durch Berührungen am Kabel oder Bluetooth-Rauschen stören extrem. Getestet wurde an einem Samsung S9 und einem Laptop mit Realtek High-Res. Den Test an der HiFi-Anlage habe ich mir gespart – hier werde ich die Kopfhörer sowieso nicht nutzen. Aber die Standboxen B&W DM603 wurden als Referenz hinzugezogen und über einen Verstärker ebenfalls an Handy und Laptop angeschlossen. Als kleine Besonderheit, um die Unverfälschtheit am ehesten beurteilen zu können habe ich versucht festzustellen, wie nah am Original Klavierklang sich eigene Aufnahmen anhören (Aufgenommen mit dem H2N Zoom, der einfach toll ist)

Design: a retro look, good touch and feel available in 3 colours all of which will feel premium and sturdy. Its quite flexible as well. Where these headphones fall down is in the bass department, with slightly rolled-off frequencies which bassheads probably won’t appreciate. We tried out James Blake’s ‘If The Car Beside You Moves Ahead’ to put the bass frequencies to the test, and found the usually-body-thumping bass drum was pretty underwhelming. However, for general use, the sound is warm and balanced enough to give you a great listening experience. The Bluetooth Major III are almost twice the cost. However, in return you get solid Bluetooth stability, high-quality aptX streaming, and up to 30 hours of battery life.

They’re slightly bassier than the Beats Solo Pro, but this is mainly because the Solo Pro aren’t bassy at all by Beats standards. Though it’s not always easy to tell, the Marshall Major III are slimmer and sleeker than their older counterparts, though they maintain the classic aesthetic. The new headphones are also significantly lighter and come with softer ear-pads to allow for a more comfortable long-term wear.
