Now, this doesn’t mean they are successful necessarily, the Titanic is a huge ship with so many moving pieces, not to mention security, there’s just no way to account for all of them, and the current owners of the Rubaiyat aren’t going to just let them have it. It feels so rushed that it seemed like an excuse to cover up the fact that Josefa recruited the only three other girls she already knew. Even as they grapple with motives, mistakes, and secrets within their own crew, the four also grapple with obstacles from the outside world: sexism, racism, parental abuse, parental loss, and being underestimated and taken advantage of for those reasons and many others. I have to say I loved Josefa’s character, she was methodical and intense and really knew how to lead a group. Josefa is a consummate swindler with a feisty personality and a dogged approach to everything she does. I almost threw my book across the room after reading that passage because it's so unbelievably stupid that Violet would believe that a Black girl in that time period would be privileged because she had finances and a good family. Josefa is a rich white girl who ran away from the comfort of her wealth because she felt suffocated and bored, and started stealing because it made her feel free.
