It’s pretty hard to enter into the sadness and sit with it in the way that the author asks the audience to do in the novel. I'm dead curious about the US edition in which the author may have expanded on the Cynthia-Kayla relationship. It's also packed with photos of close-up details of different homes from around the world, but mainly from the richest and most privileged countries in the world, the only exception being Morocco, because no hipster coffee table book can be complete without Morocco; but don't worry, the author made sure to visit only rich and privileged people's homes in Morocco, no local people's homes here, just rich and privileged expats explaining how they're oh so over living in the medina. Home Home by Lisa Allen-Agostini is an excellent book about a girl from Trinidad who learns to deal with her mental illness.

On a related note, I found the early scene with the cop so disturbing and was bothered by the way in which the adults seem to laugh it off ('oh, just flirty until they know your age' business). Beautiful photographs, but I would have liked to have seen more connection between the text and the photos. Many locations were in Europe, New Zealand, or Australia, but having traveled there, I can't say that their aesthetic is THAT different from American's that care about interior aesthetic. Ultimately, Home Home is a welcome read and insight into the life of one girl’s trials and triumphs in an extremely short period of time. This is a story of youth told from a youth’s perspective, coming to grips with strained familial relationships, depression, loneliness, self-esteem, first crushes, religion, world views and sexuality.It centered on someone from Trinidad where mental illness is still seen as something that comes from a demon. How to create balance within a room while reflecting your decorating style--successful spaces are all about addition and subtraction, positive and negative. Chris Warnes is a regular contributor to leading Australian interior publications, photographing homes and interior spaces.

I mention this because in my life I have seen that women living without male partners decorate differently. Filled with beautiful photography, transporting stories and practical advice, This Is Home reminds and inspires us to nurture the space that helps make our lives possible. I can appreciate the message the author tries to get across- use what you have, be creative, think outside the box, take your time creating a home- I am in agreement with the message of the book, just think the spaces chosen are a bit aspirational and not super realistic to most people who practice simple living. At present, it feels like there's not enough space for it to fully explore its potential but, equally, it offers a ton of potential for follow up activities and close reading exercises. As she comes to terms with cultural differences and new friendships, Kayla moves from a place of ‘penance’ to where she is ready to ‘start to get better’.The narrator attempt suicide, has several nervous breakdowns, and has an overall negative life view.

My only caveat with Home Home is that it is a relatively slender piece, and as such seems to almost finish before it starts. But this new home also brings unexpected surprises: the chance at a family that loves unconditionally, the possibility of new friends, and the promise of a hopeful future.
