Still there is so much I did like such as Tessa’s unswerving loyalty to her friends, Guy’s unswerving devotion to the woman who raised him, and finally his brilliant scheme to rid himself of an engagement he was initially prepared to see through to its conclusion until one thing served as the camel’s back breaking straw. The overture, composed after the other parts of the opera were complete, begins with a solemn three-chord sequence from the brass, associated with the Priests of the Temple of Wisdom. I learned a lot not being an opera buff, and a whole lot more about Vienna and the exquisite countryside – where I’ve visited, business and pleasure, in the 80s and 90s but never seen through such imaginative eyes as Eva Ibbotson’s.So the secondary characters are caricatures for the most part, but enchanting ones: the Russian Duke who goes nowhere without his somewhat tattered live bear, the tortured composer who goes nowhere without his yogurt culture known as The Mother, the ballet dancers known simply as “the Heidis. But Ibboton's sweet heroines are balanced by crafty servants, clever actors and other quirky characters who help advance the plot and bring about the final happy ending.

Guy’s tour, led by a Duchess and a Margravine, through his new castle digs, complete with stops at the charnel house and down the green slime coated steps to the torture chambers, is hilarious. Ibbotson said she dislikes "financial greed and a lust for power" and often creates antagonists in her books who have these characteristics.But secret lives can be complicated, and when a wealthy, handsome Englishman discovers this bewitching urchin backstage, Tessa's two lives collide - and in escaping her inheritance, she finds her destiny. Perhaps they were necessary to establish the historical background and to draw the stark contrast between Guy and Tessa, but I found I understood those much better once the story really got going, and saw the people in action and conversation. Though Martha Hodge was dubious, when she agreed to take Guy, two miracles occurred – he smiled and in his strange, green eyes, a glimmer of celestial blue appeared. No one there knows who she really is, or that a fairytale castle is missing its princess, and Tessa is determined to keep it that way.

Guy reminds me a lot of Rom from A Company of Swans, another hero who can accomplish anything by sheer force of will. They find the unconscious prince extremely attractive, and each of them tries to persuade the other two to leave her alone with him.Ibbotson has written numerous books including The Secret of Platform 13, Journey to the River Sea, Which Witch? Atleast, not one of those heady romances where every other page is filled with detailed descriptions of the heroine's face.

The characters were hard to get to know and hard to keep straight-for they had nicknames and real names that were unusual anyways.In her quiet and methodical way, she also prompts, organises food for the cast, and does some babysitting. The yolks left over from the meringue are combined with the poaching liquid to form a thin custard sauce.
