My final major problem with this book was the awful writing. This book probably had some of the worst writing of any book I've read and I don't understand how it got published. Everything about the narration made me cringe because of the quality. I don't currently have the book on hand for reference but I remember a few quotes. At one point the book said something along the lines of, "Then I noticed his arm was missing." While it might have been phrased slightly different in the book, it wasn't too much different. It said the words "then I saw." That's practically one of the number one rules of writing, YOU SHOULDN'T WRITE THAT! At another point, during a serious conversation between Tilly and Delphine, he wrote, "I was as close to Delphine as I am to you." This quote was not being spoken by one of the characters, it was narration. That's an example of breaking the fourth wall in the worst was possible. Why in the world did he decide to randomly switch into the second person? The writing of this book genuinely hurt me. Kamau: Kabonyi's son and peer of Waiyaki; he is a teacher at Marioshoni.
