Thanks to its rugged build and the ocean-blue colour, this speaker got me thinking about the beach a lot, so it seemed appropriate to pull up an “Island vibes” playlist to put it through its paces. The breezy mix of reggae, ska and R&B did a good job at showcasing the sonic capabilities of the GX-BT60, and by the time the last guitar strum faded out, I was suitably impressed. In JPEG mode the 22-bit data path doesn’t give much advantage, but in RAW mode it provides greater colour depth and more exposure latitude.

The lenses will also be compatible with the DSLRs launched by Samsung earlier in the year – the GX-1S and GX-1L which were aimed towards the serious amateur photographer. Samsung adds, “We will also expand professional lens line-up aggressively next year.After enjoying something of a renaissance for its compact camera range, Samsung has also found a way into the digital SLR market by re-badging a series of Pentax models. A Samsung representative has assured me that the company will soon launch a DSLR of its own original design, but in the meantime the re-badging tactic provides the company with a bridgehead from which it can build brand familiarity. I’ve already taken a look at the entry-level GX-1L, which started life as the Pentax *ist DL, but this week it’s the turn of Samsung’s latest offering, the GX-10. This is a bit unusual for me, since the GX-10 is a re-badged version of Pentax’s latest top-of-the-range DSLR the K10D, a camera which I have yet to review. I’ve been after Pentax to send me a review sample since the K10D was launched at the end of last year, but Samsung has beaten them to it. I don’t mind too much, since either way I get to play with a nice new camera, but it does mean that I will not be comparing the performance of the two models, since I haven’t handled the Pentax version. Samsung also announced that five kinds of lenses will be launched soon. These lenses have been designed to enable real freedom in the creative process and include: fish eye lens (fish eye 10-17mm F3.5-F4.5 ED), an ultra wide zoom lens (12-24mm F4 ED AL), a wide zoom lens (16-45mm F4 ED AL), a fixed focus lens (35mm F2 AL) and a macro lens (Macro 100mm F2.8). As with previous DSLRs that I’ve tested, I shot this image in RAW mode and then converted it to a maximum-quality JPEG using Adobe Camera RAW in Photoshop CS2. See below for a comparison crop at full resolution. The GX-10 boasts a 10.2 mega-pixel image sensor, which offers the photographer a sharper image, with richer colours for a truly compelling composition. Taking photos is made easier with the PentaPrism viewfinder with its high magnification (0.95x) to provide a clearer, wider field of view (95%) for optimum shooting. For unrivalled viewing of photos the GX-10 also comes complete with a wide view 2.5” TFT LCD (210k pixels). With its powerful built-in Optical Picture Stabilization (OPS) technology, the GX-10 prevents blurred pictures by shifting the CCD to counter any movement of the camera’s body. In addition, when a manual lens is used in ordinary digital SLR cameras, the camera’s shake prevention mechanism does not function properly since the camera does not have the lens information. In the GX-10, however, the manual lens information can be input so that film cameras’ manual lenses can also be used with the GX-10. At the maximum 1600 ISO there is a fair bit of image noise visible, but the performance is still well up to the expected standard. Compare this crop from the above image with similar shots taken on other 10MP DSLRs such as the Olympus E-400, Nikon D80, Canon EOS 400D and others. I think you’ll agree that the GX-10 is as good as any of the competition in terms of overall detail. Shooting speed is exceptionally fast. Thanks to its use of high-speed DDR2 memory (the same kind used in high-end gaming PCs) and Pentax’s new PRIME image processing engine the GX-10 can shoot at three frames a second, which is on a par with the Nikon D80, but where the D80’s buffer can only hold 23 shots in JPEG mode or 6 in RAW mode, the GX-10 can shoot 3fps JPEGs continuously until the memory card is full, or a burst of 11 RAW files, although I found that using a faster memory card significantly improved this performance. Using a fast SanDisk Extreme III SD card I was able to keep shooting in RAW mode until the card was full, with only a slight slow-down in shooting speed after the first 11 frames. While the GX-BT60 is able to reach an impressive maximum volume for a speaker of its size, it doesn’t quite manage to maintain audio fidelity at its loudest. For the most part, output remains consistent but there were a few instances where trebles felt a little piercing at the highest volume. These issues were rare and not overly impactful, but it’s something worth taking into account if you’re planning on regularly cranking it up to the max. The GX-10 has been designed to let the photographer customize and take control of their camera with the My Set Dial option allowing you to personalise your dial settings by choosing your most frequently used functions for ultimate ease of use.

Rounding out the list of features is a built-in microphone, allowing you to use the speaker for calls or hailing your voice assistant, and “Duo Mode”. This function enables you to pair two GX-BT60 speakers to create a stereo sound experience. As I only received one speaker, I can’t attest to the efficacy of this, but Sharp claims that with a direct line of sight, the two speakers should be able to perform with a range of over 40 metres between them. Battery wise its also really good not quite as good as the B&O Beoplay A1 but with 20 hours playtime and the charge time from 0% is 3 hours. The negative which this speaker has is the microphone it’s poor when using it to take calls and for when using my devices smart assistant it just did not hear me it’s not a deal-breaker just annoying meaning am having to do more of the changes via my phone.
