This poem describes something my partner and I do every night - just sitting together in front of the TV, naked but warm under a blanket, and perfectly at ease with our bodies. The book deconstructs misconceptions surrounding race and highlights the truths that underpin racism. In My Skin Your Skin, we read about racism and thereafter how we might stamp it out, stand up to it and feel empowered. They work with your brain and nervous system, so that your brain gets the message about what you're touching.Illustrated by the talented Onyinye Iwu It’s aimed at children aged 4 and above, explaining what racism is, why it is wrong, what children can do if they see it or experience it. I thought Iwu's illustrations were sweet but there was, perhaps, greater opportunities to create more moments in the book to depict scenarios for discussion. Most importantly, the book empowers children to be the best versions of themselves; to have self -love, self-esteem and self-worth, irrespective of their skin colour. Thereafter in three sequences we see how racism is born and spreads; in each instance we’re reminded ‘It is wrong’. The nerves quickly send this message to the brain or spinal cord, which then immediately commands the muscles to take your hand away.
