Slight oddness aside, it became very clear that there is no magic art to whisky judging. It is still all a matter of opinion. There were some widely divergent scores as personal taste reared its head, even within our pod of four. I can’t help but think that perhaps whisky could benefit from adopting aspects of approaches from elsewhere within the drinks industry - The WSET (Wine and Spirit Educational Trust) Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine provides an excellent (and scalable with experience and ability) matrix for the judging of quality. Utilising a matrix-like approach seems dreadfully middle-class business school, but it could provide baseline expectations and offer more gradation than a points scale that punishes and praises within 10% of each other.

PALATE: The first sip is akin to biting into a succulent, fresh peach dusted with vanilla sugar, accompanied by playful notes of lemon drops and a touch of greenery. As the journey continues, subtle sherry undertones merge seamlessly with the warm embrace of freshly baked biscuits and a gentle hint of oak. I attended a very interesting Whisky Squad last night where the theme for the evening was competition scoring. Divided into ‘pods’ of four, we were asked to score some recent medal winning drams and then compare and contrast with colleagues within our pod to award an overall medal (or not) to six different whiskies. Scoring in a collaborative and collegial manner is quite intriguing and provides yet further proof that spirits appreciation really all is a matter of opinion. FINISH: The finish lingers for a medium duration, leaving notes of malt, oak, and a gentle kiss of lemon pepper. Going to just be brutally honest and say I don't like this whisky but I will explain it's good and bad points: A subtle nutty maltiness and a dash of pepper on the palate. Adding a few drops of water softens the slight alcohol heat. It brings forth the green notes, creating a complex and utterly delightful experience.Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 20th Anniversary Edition Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2019 Taste: A good mouthfeel for both the 43% and likewise the light character of Aultmore. Honey, toffee and hay again, but now more defined with apple peels, grapes, orange zest and some real creaminess. Earthiness is still here, quite musty, almost like a forest mushroom.

Then again, I got the impression last night that in some ways the details of an individual’s scoring was largely irrelevant. It was the group discussion, conversation and collaboration to find that consensus point that really mattered. And that feels very like whisky to me. I won’t name names, but let’s just say you look at the monthly outturn of some of the more fan-favourite bottlers and despite being twenty-something years of age the liquids are simply one Pantone away from new make spirit. This makes me wonder what on earth have these whiskies being matured in? How much amelioration has gone on, if any? Were these vessels completely inert? The word “Aultmore” originates in the Gaelic term “A t-Allt Mor,” roughly translating to ‘big burn.’ Here, the ‘burn’ refers to the Burn of Auchinderran, the pristine water source for the distillery. the nose is nice (and easily the best part of this whisky) with a decent amount of complexity and variety.We may sell, license, transfer, assign or in any other way dispose of the Service (including Members) to any third party without any notification to you, e.g. (but without limitation) in connection with any reorganization, restructuring, merger or sale, or other transfer of assets. overall thin feeling, not at all rich in my opinion. It has a few core flavors which could be rich but they feel too distant and the thinness of the mouth feel just underlines that fact. the finish takes that bitterness and runs with it, leaving you with an unpleasant, and often metallic, flavor in your mouth.
