Here’s what we know so far about the one-off biopic The Colour Room on Sky Cinema… 'The Colour Room' release date... What’s the story? A documentary about The Beatles, which, as it turned out, chronicled more-or-less their last days – although a lot of the footage of the band falling out with each other was cut to make to make the film less abrasive. The final product follows the band recording at Apple Corps Headquarters and staging an impromptu gig on the studio roof. Clarice Cliff (Phoebe Dynevor) is a vivacious young factory worker in the industrial British midlands of the 1920s. Her creativity and ambition drives her to move factory to factory, despite the financial impact on the household she shares with her widowed mother Ann (Kerry Fox) and youngest sister Dot (Darci Shaw). Bursting at the seams with ideas for colors and shapes, Clarice takes more and more dangerous risks -- but she manages to stay one step ahead of the workhouse and impress the eccentric factory owner Colley Shorter (Matthew Goode) on the way with her talent and innovation. Apprenticed to renowned Art Designer Fred Ridgeway (David Morrissey) and with support from Colley and other women in the factory, Clarice fights her way through to design the unprecedented Art Deco 'Bizarre' range. In the middle of the Great Depression, she ensures the factory's survival and her future as one of the greatest Art Deco designers and a household name.

It is no surprise that Peate was keen to write this biopic, as Cliff is an inspiring figure in many ways. She became a star in her field at a time when it was exceptionally difficult for a woman to get ahead, and she had trailblazing ideas. She also played a significant role in revolutionising how pieces are sold by moving them out of the art fairs and galleries and taking them straight to the target customers. What’s the story? The second film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, and the first sound version (sadly the silent one is lost). Ladd is Gatsby, and had planned to direct until he fell out with studio Paramount over the rest of the casting. Richard Maibaum, who went on to pen loads of the James Bond films, wrote the screenplay. Matthew Goode stars as eccentric factory boss owner Colley Shorter, who’s impressed by Clarice’s talent and innovation. It’s thanks to his support that Clarice goes on to design the art deco "Bizarre" range, making her a household name and ensuring the factory’s survival. Colley also later becomes her husband. Matthew was most recently seen in Sky One’s fantasy-romance A Discovery of Witches, based on the book trilogy series by Deborah Harkness. The nearest Showcase cinemas to Stoke-on-Trent are Dudley, Derby, Nottingham and Leicester. She said: “We operate a day and date model and unfortunately those chains won’t agree to a day and date release, which is why they are not showing the film.” However, she ultimately gains the attention of quirky factory owner Colley Shorter, who is impressed by her endless ideas and apprentices her to renowned art designer Fred Ridgeway before sending her to the Royal College of Art and finally helping her establish her own studio. Cliff then helps design the Art Deco Bizarre range with the support of Colley and the other women in the factory. Her hard work and success helps the factory survive in the midst of The Great Depression and Cliff is recognised as an icon.

Initially, there’s little about The Colour Room to catch the eye. The story of 1920’s ceramic artist, Clarice Cliff, who turned out to be something of a trailblazer and, for those who know next to nothing about the industry (probably most of us), the title doesn’t give much of a clue. But the one thing that will catch your attention is the name at the top of the cast list. Phoebe Dynevor, from the huge Netflix hit, Bridgerton. And she makes this, her first feature film, very much her own. Instead of mastering one skill to improve her earnings, she started one apprenticeship as an enameller, and then another as a lithographer at another factory to learn different aspects of production. Although supporting her widowed mother and her sister, she risked destitution by changing jobs so often. All of the potteries still had Victorian perceptions of what women wanted in terms of design. It's a wonderful opportunity to promote how ground-breaking Clarice Cliff was in her day, and encourage local children to follow in her footsteps in breaking down barriers. It's very disappointing that so few local children will get to see The Colour Room at the cinema, but we are grateful to the Mitchell Arts Centre for showing it." Chris Routledge, of Bradwell, whose son Nathan is one of the extras in the film, had hoped to be able to watch it at a local cinema.

What’s the story? Teenage post-high-school hi-jinks in an apartment complex in the LA suburbs. Cameron Crowe wrote it before he made his directorial debut with Say Anything..., and it’s often compared to the also Crowe-written Fast Times At Ridgemont High. Some have even called it a pseudo-sequel, although it isn’t officially that. Stoke Film Theatre is currently still closed due to the pandemic but a spokesman said they plan to show The Colour Room when they are able to re-open. A spokesperson for Sky said that the Vue, Odeon and Cineworld chains were not showing the film because they require a gap between the theatrical release and availability on streaming services, rather than simultaneously releasing a film on both platforms, known as 'day and date release'. Darci Shaw says: "Dot has her own identity as a Paintress at Wilkinsons, she does contrast Clarice in the sense of what they want their lives to be. Dot wants to have a family, to be settled and married whereas Clarice has these wild dreams of designing and success that neither Dot nor Ann can really understand. When I first walked on set and saw their bedroom I remember thinking how well it represents their relationship; Dot’s side is tidy, pretty, just so, and Clarice’s side is bursting with colour and ambition." What’s the story? A film about a famous battle of the Korean War, from the director of Dr. No and Thunderball and starring Henry V, Yojimbo and Shaft. It sounds like a nailed-on cult classic – which it is to some extent – but it’s also one of the most notorious flops in cinema history. David Morrissey ( The Singapore Grip) is Clarice’s mentor, the renowned art designer Fred Ridgeway, while Darci Shaw (the young Judy Garland in Judy) is her sister, Dot, and Kerry Fox ( Shallow Grave, Last Tango in Halifax) as her widowed mother, Ann. Also look out for Luke Norris ( Dr Dwight Enys in Poldark), among the cast.
