At the wide end, the lens can focus as close as 1 ft. 8 inches (50cm), but as is usually the case, closest focusing distance increases as you zoom, with full tele limited to 6ft. 7 inches (2 meters). The Coolpix A900 offers a special Macro mode, however, which allows for an extremely close 0.4 in. (1 cm) focusing distance when zoomed out to the widest focal length. The Nikon Coolpix A1000 performs best when the light is good, and not so well when it isn't. In these conditions, the camera is capable of producing some nicely detailed images that can be printed up to A3 in size. If you examine them at 100%, though, even at the lower ISO sensitivities, it’s possible too see some instances of image smoothing in the JPEGs and noise in the RAW files. Warning - Nikon Coolpix A900 is not a tropicalized camera. If you use it in adverse conditions, you could ruin it.

Technically speaking, Nikon Coolpix A1000 is superior to Nikon Coolpix A900, with an overall iCamRank score of 55 and 33, respectively.The A900 is equipped with SnapBridge, something that’s appearing on all new Nikon cameras. This maintains a constant low-power Bluetooth connection with your phone (once you’ve set it up). Images can be transferred across automatically, without the hassle of having to connect via Wi-Fi every time you want to transfer a photo. Warning - Nikon Coolpix A900 battery has only 300.0 shoots autonomy. This might be a limiting factor if you think you'll have to do long photo sessions without having the chance to recharge it.

The EVF does feature a handy sensor that detects when you hold the camera up to your eye and automatically switches from the rear LCD screen to the EVF. Alternatively, you can use the button immediately to the right of the viewfinder to toggle between the two displays. The Nikon A900's ISO sensitivity range spans from 80 to 1600 in automatic shooting modes. Users can however select up to ISO 3200, but only in P, A, S, or Manual exposure modes. With a new sensor, it's not surprising to see a different ISO range than the earlier S9900, which ranged from ISO 125-6400. It is interesting, however, that the maximum sensitivity is now capped at a lower ISO 3200. Given the small sensor size and higher resolution, this is probably a wise choice as image quality at very high ISOs on a 1/2.3-inch type sensor can be severely degraded. Tilting touchscreen .The bright 3 inch, 1036k-dot LCD monitor can be tilted in almost any direction.A digital zoom is also available, which you’ll know you’re using because the zoom indicator bar at the top of the screen will turn from white to blue. In general, it’s best to avoid the digital zoom unless you’re super-desperate, and with a 35x optical zoom you actually have plenty to play with. The Coolpix A1000 also has a subtly redesigned hand-grip, which we found easier to grip and general nicer to use than the one on the A900. On the rear of the camera there’s a small thumb rest area, which is also coated in a rubberised material. Other than those two changes, the cameras are very similar, with both using the same 35x, 24-840mm lens with variable maximum apertures of f/3.4-6.9, depending where you are in the focal range. General purpose metering does a good job to produce balanced exposures, only requiring a little exposure compensation in scenarios where we’d usually expect it - such as very high contrast scenes. Colours are also nice and vibrant, having a good amount of punch without straying into unrealistic territory. Automatic white balance does reasonably well in most conditions, but it can err ever so slightly towards warmer tones under artificial light. You may also want to switch to the Cloudy setting when photographing under grey skies and you want to boost colours slightly.

The lens is comprised of 13 elements, including four ED elements, situated into 11 groups. The amount of zoom is certainly handy, but the lens itself isn't the brightest, with a variable maximum aperture of just f/3.4 at the wide end and f/6.9 at full telephoto. Thankfully, to help with lower light situations and at the longer zoom range, the A900 is equipped with Vibration Reduction -- a combination of optical VR and electronic stabilization -- though we don't have a spec for how much correction the VR system can compensate for. A device with Bluetooth 4.0 ® or later (i.e., a device that supports Bluetooth Smart Ready/Low Energy) is required. That said, if you have any desire to shoot in low light, you may find the performance a little disappointing. Although images are usable at very small sizes, they don’t match up to the high quality that the camera can produce in bright light. If your main intention is to use it as a holiday or day trip camera, that may not be such a big issue for you.

Like many of Nikon’s newest models, the Nikon Coolpix A1000 is equipped with Snapbridge. This means that once you’ve set it up, the camera can maintain a low-power bluetooth connection with your smartphone to automatically transfer images and video across to your phone without having any additional input. You can either have images send across at full size or at a reduced size to save time (transferring over bluetooth is slower than over Wi-Fi). It’s a very handy tool that works well to take the hassle out of transferring your images ready for uploading to social networking - this may be particularly appealing to those who want to use the camera while on holiday. This camera allows you to take full manual control, and as such you’ll find options reflecting that on the mode dial on the top of the camera. As well as manual mode, semi-automatic options such as aperture priority and shutter priority are also available. For those who want to keep it simple, there’s a fully automatic mode alongside creative control, scene modes and a movie mode. Reduced the occurrence of an issue that in rare cases prevented the restoration of normal operation if the camera was restarted after the message “Turn the camera off and then on again” was displayed.
