It was a very interesting read as I have a friend who winter swims and had previously asked me to join her. She would also talk about other benefits to winter swimming… mental health, inflammation, fitness with the caveat that it’s inconclusive. WINTER SWIMMING is both a beautifully illustrated exploration of cold-water traditions in Scandinavia and around the world, and a thorough account of why it provides such a boost to body and soul. Danish scientist Susanna Søberg leads us step by step into the icy water and explains the "cold-shock response", the massive endorphin rush as our body reacts and adapts. This beautifully illustrated exploration of cold-water traditions in Scandinavia and around the world shows how it can have a significant positive impact on our physical and mental health, confidence and well-being, providing such a boost to body and soul. If you feel better doing it, great but you prob don't need this book to confirm your feelings about the activity. Full of brilliant insights on the cold-shock response and its benefits for mood and the immune system, Winter Swimming is an inspiring book that will keep people working out all through the darkest months.

It felt like each chapter was just a different way of saying "swimming in cold water is hard, but I promise it will feel good afterwards! Danish scientist Dr Susanna Søberg leads us step by step into the icy water and explains the “cold-shock response”, the massive endorphin rush as our body reacts and adapts to very cold temperatures through the winter season. There were a few mentions here and there about obesity and weight loss that I personally found out of place and addressed quite superficially, like associating obesity with being comfortable as opposed to being active, to name one. This was a thesis in a book, a lot of repeating the statements (up to 8 times) and I did enjoy the knowledge I gained from it.

While that may the be the only dataset available, I would have appreciated a brief mention of the fact that there were no studies available (? This is a great introductory book to winter swimming providing statistics and anecdotal evidence regarding the positive impact that winter swimming has had. However, the American version of this book doesn’t come out til the end of January 2023… well into Winter Swimming season.Don't get me wrong the history of cold water swimming was enlightening and the information on saunas was informative for me.
