They are all beautifully written and very interesting, but I prefer shorter short stories: ones you can read in a single sitting (10-20 pages) and a couple of these were much longer. She was taken way to early by the most horrible disease which requires as many donations as possible, hopefully so other families don’t have to suffer such a wicked end to their lives. Doerr is the author of three previous books, all good: a novel, “About Grace”; a travel memoir, “Four Seasons in Rome” (which includes an account of the writing of “Village 113”); and another volume of stories, “The Shell Collector. Thank you for always being there for all of us, it was our honour to care for you in your final months. At several points I laid out the stories I hoped to include on the carpet, and reread their beginnings and endings, trying to figure out a meaningful sequence, how to move from seeds in “Village 113” to embryos in “Procreate, Generate.It’s the rarest thing, Luvo thinks, that gets preserved, that does not get erased, broken down, transformed. while I was working on it, so I spent a lot of odd hours confined to a bed or a chair working on that piece. When I finished this book, I remained stuck in a sort of trance state, sitting in my living room, but traveling through the worlds that Doerr created. Two hundred and fifty million years ago, he said, these creatures died in the mud, their bones compressed slowly into stone.

Alma watched the tallest of them spit slowly into a porcelain drinking fountain, then suck the spit back into her mouth. They’re about time and memory, and they move to a rhythm that suggests something pulsing under their calm surfaces, the steady breaking of old blood, old memories, the oldest waves of human feeling. But apart from the tendency to show his workings, this collection is an impressively rich and nuanced consideration of memory, time and loss. Often you might not even know, at least at the outset, what you’re trying to say, what kind of image you’re trying to make, what kind of narrative you’re shaping.

Memory Wall takes place on four continents and addresses issues from Alzheimer’s in South Africa to infertility in Wyoming to fishing for endangered sturgeon in Lithuania.
