On hindsight, this is a really good book to get yourself familiar with the history of these two countries, even if you're not from either of them.

After working as a journalist for a French press group for ten years, Paris-based Clarke now has a regular spot on French cable TV, poking fun at French culture. Amongst all the good natured ribbing, Stephen Clarke gives an interesting history lesson on these two countries peppered with anecdotes and trivia. The War Cabinet had the final word, and Churchill agreed to Britain’s continued championing of de Gaulle.Churchill, who was in Washington, exchanged memos and telegrams with his Cabinet in London and is shown to agree with U. So from that point of view it gives great pleasure to hit the French with la baguette de l'histoire. I hope, at least, I'll remember all of the shattered myths, such as about Joan of Arc and other famous characters.

Maybe it was because that was where my interest lay more in the earlier periods of history but I found the last part of the book with De Gaulle fairly uninteresting, though I didn't know about any of it really. In short, the French are quite right to suspect that the last 1,000 years have been one long British campaign to infuriate them.

But exactly the same thing can be said about the French and the all English-speakers – no matter what we try to do in the present, the past will always march up and slap us in the face. A millennium which shows that no matter the country, history is mostly about greed and back stabbing, which translates into political/economical alliances or in medieval times, marrying into another kingdom to increase one’s land and domination.

So I can attest that the present updated version is even more fun to listen to, owing not just to the material itself but also to the impecable narration. A 'deliciously' entertaining read from start to finish - probably the most entertaining history book I've ever read (and I do enjoy a bit of history). The list is long because it being tongue in cheek, “1,000 Years” depicts a France that has nothing to be proud of.Though maybe this book would be even better served with a companion novel, depicting the same events but from a French point of view, while poking fun at the British. He takes delight in pointing out that William the Conqueror was not French and that he loathed them as much as they loathed him and his barbaric Norman ways. Luckily I have a French Canadian husband so he can do my speaking for me as I tend to freeze up when spoken to in French.
