Just as you might do with a bicycle tire patch, you may find that you may need to patch the area of your boot regularly if you want to extend the life of your wellies. You should also familiarise yourself with how to store Wellington boots to ensure they last even longer. If you’re not sure how much you need to cut, cut a patch of rubber that’s a little bigger than the hole or split. Apply A Thin Layer of Adhesive

I wondered if there was anything I could get that I could just run along the seam and maybe repair the leak? Something like a kind of glue, or silicone? Anyway, my current pair have sprung leaks. I have a leak on both boots, in the same place. It's on the side of the ball of the foot, you know, where the big toe joint is. I can't see any holes and with it being on the same place on both feet I suspect that it's wear and tear on the seam. Apart from that the boots are still in great shape despite being about 10 years old and having had a lot of wear. Autumn is here and Winter will not be far around the corner so it is time to get out my winter boots. Towards the end of last Winter or the beginning of Spring I noticed that my boots were suffering from a little wear and tear (both my wellington boots and more heavy duty walking boots). But as the weather started warming up a bit I didn’t really give much thought to getting them repaired as you wouldn’t be needing them for a while. So I just put them in the cupboard and thought I’ll get round to them when I need them again. But, of course life happens and I never did! Use the rubber solution or adhesive that comes in the kit. Apply a very thin layer and leave it for 2-3 seconds. Next, take the patch you have made and gently place it on top of the solution or adhesive. Ensure that the edges have been pressed down firmly. Ideally, you will find an alternative method such as using a bonding adhesive. Ensure that it’s suitable for use with footwear. If it isn’t, it could actually do even more damage to your boots. Do your research and find out what works.The kit contains a 5g tube of Stormsure Flexible Repair Adhesive, two 75mm (diameter) TUFF Tape patches, along with protective gloves.

When fixing wellies using the tape method, the gaffer tape is effective in repelling water. The boots will withstand light tasks such as working in the garden and walking in puddles, but the tape is bound to peel off after regular soaking. Clean off mud and dirt from the damaged area with a light detergent and water. Then clean well with a chemical cleaner, such as acetone. Also try and make sure the sole is clean and dry before application. Time spent with preparation is key here for the best results. To slow this process, it is worth washing the boots down with water (and a light detergent if necessary) when they get muddy or at least every 2-3 months. Then, when dry, spray them with a quality silicon-based spray (we sell Aigle Swipol and Le Chameau sprays). This will ‘feed’ the rubber and stop it ‘crazing’ and perishing, keeping it supple and completely waterproof.
