Calico is a puzzly tile-laying game of quilts and cats. In Calico, players compete to sew the coziest quilt as they collect and place patches of different colors and patterns. Each quilt has a particular pattern that must be followed, and players are also trying to create color and pattern combinations that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also able to attract the cuddliest cats! As your turns pass, you’ll be building your quilt in the same way as in multiplayer mode – having one eye on achieving colour based button and pattern connected cat bonuses, and the other on achieving the design goal tiles! I’d recommend Catan as an alternative to Calico for anyone who wants a family board game but isn’t a massive fan of cats (or quilts!). In this addictive game, trade, build, and settle on the island of Catan as you control your own civilization and spread across the board.Cascadia is a puzzly tile-laying game featuring the habitats and wildlife of the Pacific Northwest! In Cascadia, players take turns building their terrain and populating it with wildlife. Players must create a diverse and harmonious ecosystem - each animal species has a different spatial preference and each habitat must be placed to reduce fragmentation and create wildlife corridors.

Design goal tiles contain long-term goals that could score points at the end of the round, though this depends on the six patch tiles surrounding it.Speaking of the player boards, this is where the action unfolds as you construct your patchwork duvet for the cats to moult on! Before the game starts you will choose or randomly draw three scoring tiles. It’s Calico time… Okay, so you’ve got your cat and you’ve got your quilt. But how do you turn those beauties into points? Well, have no fear for I am here to show you how to play the purrrrrfectly puzzly Calico! Sewing Up Each round you begin with a set of numbered tokens that represent your spell strengths. These tokens are used to cast spells and bid on a grid of items (and special actions) on the forest floor. Once you cast a spell, your rival mystics will have an opportunity to cast a more powerful spell onto an adjacent item, hoping to compel it towards them and prevent you from collecting what you need! As the forest is explored, different conditions of magical control will restrict pathways, leading to strategic situations where players can ‘corner cast’ and secure multiple items with less powerful spells. If your spell casting comes up short on the forest floor, you can always make an offering to the forest sprites - magical mice that have their own cache of treasures they may share with you, giving you further options to expand your collection. Possibly one of the most wholesome board games to have ever been created, Calico combines the art of quilt designing with adorable cats. So whether you have a feline friend at home or wish that you did, it’s the perfect game for cat lovers.

Each tile has a colour and a pattern and the scoring tiles have a request like AAA-BBB this means that the six tiles are either of two colours or two patterns to score, however if you manage to have both two colours and two patterns around the tile you will score more points! This is where the brain burn comes in as you try to maximise your points.

Reveal three patch tiles to form the tile market. This should be positioned in the center of the table. To score points, design goal tiles have to be completed using either the patterns or colors of the six surrounding tiles.

NB: for added competition, we tend to select 3 at random and then have everybody place the same ones in the same slots on their own boards). There is an element of strategy involved which gives the board game a wide appeal, but it isn’t so complex that younger children would struggle to play. The small button and corresponding cat tokens are placed within easy reach and each player takes two coloured patch tiles from the communal bag into their hand. Finally, three more patch tiles are removed from the bag and placed in the central area between the boards to make up the draw pile. And that’s it; it’s sewing time!
