With lots of models and alternative terrain on the board, Mission 4 introduces new terrain rules and the Morale phase and its accompanying attrition tests.

The first mission has the Space Marine player using 3 Intercessors and the Necron player using 5 Warriors and simply talks the players through using movement and shooting. You’re a parent with no clue about Warhammer. Now you have an Elite Starter Set and a really excited kid. You don’t need to concern yourself with getting that pile of grey sprues all built and ready before you can get started; nor do you have to fret about the waning attention span of your exciteable child. On all three models, each one has a spine/hips component that is attached to the model via a hole that is pushed onto a peg inside the model’s torso. In the assembly guide it really is not clear which way round this needs to be attached to the miniature, and because each spine is not straight, if you manage to attach this to your model the wrong way round and then try and attach its legs, they will not line up with the holes on the base. It is a little strange that the Starter Sets are tipped in the favor of the Necrons – at least on paper. If you remember from the point breakdown for the Indomitus Box’s Necronsand Space Marines, those ended up being really close. They even ended up at the exact same Power Level in the end. But to be fair, at these smaller point games, it’s harder for the Space Marines to find units that fill that small point gap as they just don’t have Primaris Units that would slot in easily. I guess their faith in the Emperor (and their Power Armor saves) will have to make up the difference! Or an extra CP. Whatever…But as an introduction to Warhammer 40,000 specifically there can be no doubt that this is where to start.
