There are a few charming moments but overall I wouldn’t say it’s brimming with the magic or charm of a great story. The drawing is superb, and equally first-rate are the watercolors Grimly used to color the drawings. The written format often allows for such things more easily than the visual, and it would not have been hard to push things a bit without overly impacting the established plot. It was just very “guy gets the girl and everything along with it” and it was awkward how it centered the relationship in the final moments.

GRIS GRIMLY is an award-winning illustrator best known for his "macabre" yet humorous books for children and young adults. There are only two or three scenes that really aren't in the movie and I can't tell if it is just my bias as someone who is so familiar with the movie or if they really are cheesy scenes. Feels like the movie playing as you read it; had bits not in the movie, along with bits missing from within the movie not in the book.But this book did leave me sitting on the fence a little bit, which is why I have gone down the middle and awarded 3 stars. The book is a hefty, handsome tome - perfect for your fall coffee table decor, even if you don't choose to read it. The perfect spooky story to read during the autumn/fall season, especially if you’re a 90s kid who’s feeling nostalgic. Bonus points if you play atmospheric spooky music in the background while you read to enhance the vibe! The book has a copyright of 2022, so evidently Disney believes interest in Hocus Pocus remains strong.

The main reasons I picked up the book was that it would be a nice addition to my personal library and for the illustrations by Gris Grimly. There were a few (very small) newly-added bits that I wanted to read more about, but they weren’t the focus and didn’t get the time they deserved. The book is actually a novelization of a screenplay from a live-action movie produced by Disney that came out way back in 1993. I read the novelization of Hocus Pocus a few years ago when the novelization came out with the "sequel book" (the book sequel is completely different form Hocus Pocus 2 the movie). Outside of the publishing world, he has contributed his unique vision to film, animation, apparel design, and consumer products. Also, there are some weird lines about Allison and Max that are pretty cheesy and unnecessary, such as the line about him feeling able to conquer the world with her beside him.
