The new 3TB Barracuda reports itself as a 512-logical, 4096-byte physical drive to the operating system. Buyers looking for lower power consumption will really enjoy the lower platter count of the latest 3TB Barracuda. By offering a 1TB x 3 platter configuration instead of 600GB x 5 of the model it replaces, there is less mass to spin around which translates into lower operating needs. Yesterday Seagate announced its transition to 1TB platters with its new 7200RPM-only Barracuda line. The move marked a significant change for Seagate as it is phasing out the Barracuda Green brand, and shifting the focus of the high-performance Barracuda XT. The Barracuda Green was a rebrand of Seagate's Barracuda LP, designed to convey the lower power consumption enabled by its 5900RPM spindle speed. The front of the keeps the same SATA power/data interface as the previous models, as well as the 4 pin jumper area. With lower power consumption in mind, Seagate is now using a 40nm dual-core LSI controller on the 1TB-platter Barracudas. The chip is physically a lot smaller than what was used in the original 3TB Barracuda XT: Over the bulk of the drive surface we measured an average transfer speed of 165MB/s read and write compared to about 146MB/s of the older model. Quite a bit faster, although not as peaky as what you might think from looking at the performance specifications alone.

The new 3TB Barracuda is a bit faster in sequential performance than the old Barracuda XT, at lower power consumption. In typical desktop workloads I think it's fairly safe to say that you wouldn't notice the difference between the Barracuda and Barracuda XT. The company made a number of marketing claims that emphasized the reliability of the ST3000DM001, including the claim that the annualized failure rate of the drive is less than 1% and non-recoverable read failure rate is extremely small. These figures are both highly suspect when used to calculate overall drive reliability, but they're the only information that a hard drive manufacturer will typically release. Dealing with the drive in hand though, the 3TB Barracuda has a good deal going for it. Aside from the new platters, users are getting 7,200 RPM spindle speed, 64MB cache and several Seagate technologies like OptiCache, which makes the cache process more efficient, SmartAlign which helps legacy computers play nice with 4K sectors and DiscWizard which allows operating systems like Windows XP to take advantage of the full 3TB capacity.Outer platter top-line sequential read and write speeds are both up roughly 30% over the previous generation 5-platter drive and even the worst-case scenario inner portion of the platters saw an improvement of about 20 MB/s for both read and write activity. It’s not all perfect though, the new drive saw issues with our read-intense gaming trace, falling behind the older model.

If newer firmware is available for your drive, it will reflect the improvements we have engineered for the latest manufacturing. Firmware for legacy products will be the final release from manufacturing. Please note that Seagate does not offer details about specific firmware.The last section of our synthetic benchmarks looks at the hard drive in a server or workstation setting in profiles covering Database, File Server, Web Server, and Workstations. Overall the new 3TB Barracuda showed good improvements over the previous generation model, although couldn’t top the Western Digital 2TB models. To find out, we threw some of our storage suite at the drive and compared it to the old Barracuda XT and Green drives. I also ripped the drive out of Seagate's 4TB GoFlex Desk enclosure, a 5-platter Barracuda XT, and included it in the comparisons.
