We also see that Elmira’s obsession with the “unlucky” Dee Boot leads her and Big Zwey to being scalped.

If we look up the word ‘epic’ in the dictionary, it wouldn’t surprise me to find “Lonesome Dove”, and author Larry McMurtry mentioned. The large cast of characters carry their hopes, fears and limitations with them out onto the vast plains of the American Midwest, and the drive turns out to be dangerous in ways they couldn’t even imagine. In the narrative, the drive continues, the destinies of Roscoe and Joe and Elmira play out against a background of the drive making it across to Montana with wonderful descriptions the great west, technical explanations of the various aspects of cattle drives, and of course just great storytelling. McMurtry also touches on the place of women in society as he describes in detail the characters of Lorena, Clara, and a wandering soul named Elmira. Clara is happy to see Gus, but has no desire to rekindle their romance; however, she takes in Lorena, whose post-traumatic stress is easing and who quickly feels comfortable with Clara and her daughters.McMurtry himself eventually expressed dissatisfaction with the popularity of the novel, particularly after the miniseries adaptation. As the sun sank, the shade would gradually extend itself across the porch, the wagon yard, Hat Creek, Lonesome Dove and, eventually, the Rio Grande.

The first 1/3 of Lonesome Dove is a slow mosey through the characters’ back stories while they’re still in Lonesome Dove, TX. I’m probably not fairly a suited reviewer with my own expectations, reading history/preferences, no experience of the specific genre to scale the work against nor, being British, do I have that personal sense of the historical setting.

The author to my mind introduces many many dramatic narrative scenes but never spends more than a few pages on it, making it have a lack of depth to it.
