Description

Use the simmer ring to control the heat. If you combine this control with adding or removing a wind shield, you can achieve remarkable control over temperature. This little stove is a joy to cook on, as you can simmer really easily.

It fits nicely into the small mess tin and said tin can hold both this stove and the B26 with ease, making it quite a neat little system. The pot stands however are narrow to the mess tin making tipping rather frequent. I like the simplicity and sturdiness of the system, but occasionally the bulk of the standard stand and wind-shield combination has proved more than I really want to carry. A few years later I had discovered Trangia had done just that, to create 'add ons' that would enable the design classic that is the faithful Trangia to run on other fuels including gas, so if I want to revisit that past idea again, it will at least be easier this time around, but just to alert you to the fact these days they don't just run on meths.

Specifications

The thinness of the steel made everything feel “sharp”, but all the corners are rounded for safety, making the unit unlikely to actually damage you or your gear in use. To extinguish the stove, put the closed simmer ring over the flame. NEVER blow it out. It doesn’t work and you will end up with flaming meths everywhere. Don’t use the lid or the o ring will melt. The MSR is just a multi liquid fuel blow torch albeit a well designed and built reliable blow torch applied to the bottom of the pan and minorly the sides, but one still has to carry pans and a windbreak. As a standalone solution, it’s versatility in the burner department makes this a flexible yet strong option in the field. The best alternative fuel is EKOFUEL bioethanol, which is specifically stated as being for Trangia stoves.

Your mileage will vary, but in the real world, that’s how it works for me. What fuel does a Trangia use

Using a flint and steel it is easy to light, and I've found a good puff will blow it out (although this isn't approved by Trangia). Failing that and inverted mug will starve the flame of Oxygen. My only improvelent suggestion would be for a second ring, making the Trangle much more compatible with smaller pots and a wider pot base so it handles the small mess tin a little better. But that’s just niche me talking. I tried twice to use the cap to create a smaller flame but unless it was nearly completely open, the flame would go out moments after I put my saucepan on. I was really excited since I was looking for something lite and i heard Trangia stoves are classic. Saw quite a few Youtube videos with exactly the same setup that I have, seemed all to work perfectly.

The wind is the enemy of such alcohol burners. You need to use a wind screen that wraps around the burner and the pot. That way you ensure that the flame is centered at the bottom of the pot. Another detail is that, depending on the environment temperature, once the alcohol is boiling inside the burner, the simmer ring is not airtight, therefore, the alcohol vapor will escape by any path and will continue to burn around the burner uncontrollably. Under these conditions, it is advisable to add a little water (a teaspoon or less) to the alcohol in the burner to waste energy producing water vapor that is not combustible and reduce the amount of alcohol vapor by cooling it a little. A ratio of 85% alcohol in water will work (try your own). As is well known, water is corrosive. It is advisable to dry the burner well when not in use. Welcome to CCS! I can tell you what I "think" your problem might be: You're not using a windscreen with your setup! When I got mine, a gift from a good friend in New Zealand, it came with a light windscreen that wrapped around the stove stand. Works perfectly, and I've used mine with the Trangia simmering ring almost closed all the way, too!! Give this link a squint, and see if you understand what I mean: Buy 2, or combine it with another type of stove and you have a setup that will cook the finest of meals. It is provided with a screw cap, which will seal the unit and any remaining fuel for transportation. (Not long term storage) Petrol stoves can flare quite high at startup, so aren't good for use inside a tent, and often don't simmer well as the burner has to be kept hot enough to vaporise the fuel before it gets to the jet.If you have a pot that is less than 10cm in diameter, it will not fit on the pot stands. This is a real problem for most titanium mugs that are popular as pots. Mine falls though. Bear in mind that when you buy a Trangia Triangle, it doesn’t come with a burner. To me that is an advantage as I already have 2 and don’t need to waste money on another one. They last forever.

I'd recommend a remote canister gas stove such as one of MSR Windpro, Optimus Vega, Primus Express Spider, Edelrid Opilio, Fire Maple FMS-118 (which was being sold very cheaply by Field & Trek as the Karrimor Alpine until fairly recently). The important point is that all these have a pre-heat tube passing through the stove flame, which allows you to run the stove with the canister upside down and avoid the normal gas performance problems in cold weather or at the end of the canister. Start the stove with the canister upright, then turn it over and adjust the flame.It’s facings provide some protection from the wind and coupled to the B26 spirit burner you can in fact still use the simmer ring to a reasonable extend. If there are 2 of us, and a cooked breakfast is involved, as well as a proper evening meal, I will take 1/2 a litre of fuel. The 3 pieces of stainless clip together and the steel insert for the burner just pushes in to place. It’s so simple, but is a little fiddly until you get used to it. Then drop the burner in to place in the central hole. Having removed the lid and not quite filled it with meths beforehand. Excellent build, folds super flat and is basically a no brainer to anyone owning a trangia, especially since it makes any setup a double burner solution while adding barely any weight nor bulk. When using the windscreen like this, be sure to put the windscreen holes into the wind. Works perfectly!
