Audio can be fine tuned using four menu options (06–01 to 06–04) to control high and low frequency cutoff, but after some experimentation I have turned these options off.

It sounds like, if you are wanting to amplify this radio, you may want an amp that makes its power at lower drive, for a cleaner signal. I suspect, however, that most buyers of this radio will not be adding an HF amp.

Glad I did and recommend it to anyone who would like a quality, dependable and featured radio for any use, be it at home, mobile or portable. Adjustable signal processing – The aforementioned DSP features can all be tweaked and adjusted, which helps you get exactly the sound you want from this radio.The advanced manual for the FT–891 helpfully provides a section called ‘Tools for Comfortable and Effective Reception’, so I began configuring the radio using the guidance there. Now, go to WSJT-X and verify that signal levels coming in are being heard, and at a level that the software can use. This is shown by the audio level indicator at the bottom left of the screen. The audio level is indicated by a vertical bar. You want the signal at most to be at 80%, lowest around 30%. Adjust your computer microphone level (for the soundcard you are using) until you achieve the audio level needed. Turn the radio volume knob down to a comfortable level for you. I barely want to hear what’s going on. I like to hear it just as an indicator of what’s going on.
