Sadly there are no new extras, but everything from the Hunter Edition is replicated here on the included Blu-ray, which is the same DNRed monster previously available. The audio is available in the same 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mix found on the previous Blu-ray edition. It features good dynamic range, muscular bass, a wide and enveloping soundstage, strong directional play, smooth panning, and clear dialogue. Alan Silvestri’s score is presented with satisfying fidelity. True, there’s no object-based mix, but I’m not sure what one might add to the experience. This mix is plenty solid and represents the film well. There’s also an English theatrical mix in 4.0 DTS-HD Master Audio available, along with 5.1 Dolby Digital in Spanish, Czech, and Polish, and 5.1 DTS in French, Castilian, German, and Italian. Optional subtitles are included in English for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Spanish, French, Castilian, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, German, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, two Chinese dialects, Czech, and Polish.

Conclusion

Predator was shot and finished photochemically, so, natively speaking, it's a rich source for a 4K home video presentation. For this 2160p / H.265 / HDR10 master, I have no knowledge whether it is a new recent scan, the restored scan Studio Canal did a few years ago, or if it's the same scan used for the Ultimate Hunter release before it was butchered with excessive DNR. No details were given in any press release I could find. Arnie’s film output is a bit of a mixed bag. Sure his work with James Cameron has always yielded great results, but outside of that collaboration there isn’t much to write home about, even in his early career. There is one that stands out from the crowd, though, tonight’s feature: Predator. A seminal action film that still stands up today, some 30 plus years later, even with its 80’s cheese. Quite possibly Arnie’s finest hour (or 107 minutes!). Surely there can’t be anyone who doesn’t know the film by now? Arnie plays Dutch, leader of a Special Forces team, duped into a rescue mission, only to find themselves facing off against an alien predator who wants nothing but their skulls. Such a simple premise brought to life by director John McTiernan who cast his film with huge muscle bound ‘actors’ all of whom wanting to take their size to the next level, which brought about a rivalry and intense competition on set that gives a fervour to the on screen personas. The chemistry between the actors is intense and this coupled with a non-stop action script and an alien design that created an icon (thanks to a hasty character design by effects maestro Stan Winston) the effect is an action film that all want to live up to. It is pure in its unashamed identity and wears its credentials on its sleeve. Predator-- 4/5 stars --has never looked better on home video. That isn't to say that it is a perfect presentation. As this film was marred with an assortment of production issues, there are a number of soft focus shots, shots with heavy grain, or overly dark that simply can't be completely fixed. that said, free of any horrid DNR issues and the smart judicious usage of HDR10, the image is a notable improvement. Note: My colleague Brian Orndorf was considerably less pleased with this sequel than I was. You can read Brian's thoughts somewhat "dupey" looking) grain in the opening couple of seconds, a tendency that only improves once the actual film starts. While there are This release of Predator is probably one of the single biggest blunders of a major studio release of the Blu-ray era. While the original 2008 release had issues, this effort to fix and clean things up goes too far. The only acceptable way to view this transfer is on thefun and surprisingly effective Predator 3D release -- which sadly is not included in this set. This is a great little film. Deftly directed by action familiar John McTiernan ( Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October), the original Predator works on almost every level. Much of this is due to the simplicity of its story and the effectiveness of its dialogue. The film convincingly starts out as a basic commando actioner... but gradually twists in a different direction. The cast is solid across the board, breathing life into characters that are sparsely drawn, but become absolutely familiar. You like these guys, and while you don’t know much about them, you know everything you need to root for them. Clinching the film’s success, the Predator itself (as conceived by writers Jim Thomas and John Thomas, and realized by Stan Winston) is surprisingly believable and original. This creature is both dangerous and interesting. It’s the perfect mano-a-mano foil for Schwarzenegger’s campy, pumped-up bravado.
