They first appeared in The Ultimate Fun Book. And now there are other Where's Wally characters as the books star some of Wally’s friends including Wilma (Where's Wally's girlfriend), Wenda, Wizard Whitebeard, Odlaw and Woof (Where's Wally's dog)! Wally, whose name was localised for certain international editions, for example Waldo in North American editions. In the first two books, Wally wandered alone and was the only person to be found in every illustration. Over time, more characters were added to find in each scene.
