Eating his way out of one book and into another help the children to predict and feel successful when they figure out the pattern. As is the case with many of my activities, my favorite part is hearing what the pre-k students come up with for answers! They are so cute, funny, and clever. The illustrations in the book are beautiful and will delight both kids and adults. The age recommended in the version was 3 to 5 years, but kids from all ages will enjoy not only be told the story, but going through the way (holes) the character did in the books. Have fun. I did! 😉 This literacy activity is incredibly simple, as it is intended as just a fun ‘filler’ project. But just because it’s a ‘filler’ does not mean that there isn’t the intention behind the activity! Nibbles the Book Monster activities can be fun and yet still have intention behind them. Synopsis

Some ideas for this book would be to discuss the similarities and differences between the folklore stories to compared to the original or a different version. There are many similarities and differences that the students could find. They could create a Venn Diagram to show the similarities and differences. Since there are a few different versions mentioned within the Book Monster, the teacher would have great examples to do a teacher model, a we do example, and a student do. Also, students could complete a sequence of events for the Book Monster to explain what happened throughout the story. Students could also write about what they think will happen next to Nibbles. Students could create their own story about Nibbles and his next adventure. Lastly, the teacher could have a discussion about how students know that this is a fractured fairy-tale/folklore story and how this story is different from nonfiction. Leonardo really is a terrible monster – so terrible that he can't scare anyone, ever. Then, one day, he hatches a plan... I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly! It's really interactive - the kids can search for Nibbles or for where he chomped a hole to get in to the story book. And they also help catch Nibbles at the end.

Children can so easily use this book and their own favourite traditional tales to create their own version of a monster who travels through books. The first document contains a ‘Book Talk Map’. This is the perfect document to guide your discussion after story time with questions to encourage children to think critically and imaginatively to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for Nibbles! High quality book talk is imperative in supporting a reading for pleasure attitude in our pupils. These questions provide a prompt for rich discussion questioning children’s perspectives on the book and what they like or dislike about it. E little creature who likes to bite and chew anything, but has his heart on chomping books. Here are some ways I am using this activity to produce some educational outcomes in my class. Learning Ideas for Literacy These picture books, featuring witches, wizards and monsters, are perfect to share with little ones as the nights draw in and there's a touch of frosty magic in the air. I also have to give extra credit to the book cover. Normally books are paper and feel cold/hard on the touch, but not this one. It has texture, but also seems to not been made from paper but from fabric. I love it when publisher/authors do something special to their books. The book is riddled with holes here and there, holes through which Nibbles ate himself a way out. I loved that they were added it made the book so much more fun.I think that this book is accessible to all year groups and activities and writing goals and be altered to suit all ages and abilities. The main reason for skipping this book was that it includes stories from classic fairy tales and I really don't like fairy tales. Fantastic production makes this book a really exciting reading experience. Older children will love the havoc Nibbles creates in the fairy tales they know so well, while little readers will adore the cheeky look in his eyes as he tears through the book. The final reveal is another fabulous surprise. Nibbles is sure to be a hit with the whole family.
