I enjoyed the whole story, got lost in who was doing what with who, believed every red herring for at least a moment and was suitably shocked at the eventual finale. He was her first love, and even though she is now a successful doctor and about to get married, he will always be someone special to her. Opening with narrator Jude telling the story of the car crash that changed her life when she was seventeen, it immediately holds your attention. Excels at depicting an ordinary life swept away by horror' Observer 'Fantastic - a breathless drumbeat of dread and suspense' Lee Child'Heart-thumping, head-scratching, nail-biting stuff: The Favour is classic Nicci French. I had not read any books by Nicci French before, so I was very excited to start, especially as I am a fan of a thrilling read.

It's implied that Jude is an incredibly intelligent woman though you'd never guess that by reading this book. In 2011, French wrote Blue Monday, introducing the psychotherapist Frieda Klein, which became the first novel in a popular series. Granted, the main character seems unstable and undecided beyond belief, letting herself stay surprisingly adrift and tossed around by events, but it still kept me glued to the book.I've read a lot of thrillers, my favorite genre, but have never come across one as inventive as this! I did find this book a page-turner, as I just had to know what was going to happen and who was involved with what throughout the narrative. She spoke and acted like no other detective ever and I'm a little surprised she carries a badge at all.When Liam unexpectedly turns up in Jude’s life after ten years of no contact, asking her for a favour, she just can’t say no.

narration was bearable until it came to Jude's mother who sounded like some simpleton from On The Buses. However, ‘The Favour’ fails to engage when Jude becomes more and more caught up with Liam’s housemates.

As always, Nicci French has written a page turner but this story did not work for me on a psychological or emotional level. One of contemporary British fiction’s most famous double-acts, Nicci French is the pseudonym of husband and wife writing team Nicci Gerard and Sean French. I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and William Morrow and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased. However, the story goes downhill from there - a nightmare mix of nasty characters, over- complex plot and bad choices. Unlike Jude - oblivious, indebted and confident - I was a little less trusting and I soon began to detect a few red flags. A warm, unsentimental and beautifully-observed book for our times' Lucy Caldwell, author of These Days 'If I were in bother I'd want the Ballybrady bunch at my back.

That these odious, and yet quickly forgettable, characters seem to have a hold on Jude is very hard to believe.
