It’s difficult to define Leibovitz’s style of photography because she continually adapts her style to reflect the times and the demands of her clients. I’ve never asked anyone to do something which doesn’t seem right to them. And I don’t ask them to do something for no reason. There’s always some thought behind my pictures. I throw out several ideas and see what they want to do. When I photographed the performance artisy Rachel Rosenthal, for instance, I gave her three or four ideas. The last one was about being buried in the sand in the desert. That’s the one she got excited about. I always ask a subject if they have ideas. Fast forward to 1967, Leibovitz finds herself in Japan with her mother and some of her siblings to visit her father at a military base. It was in Japan where she bought her first camera. A spark was ignited. Having begun the previous year at the San Francisco Art Institute as a painting major, she shifted gears and became a photography major. The rest is history. Leibovitz today considers herself more of a visual artist who uses the camera as a tool for creating her narrative-driven images. The photograph was subsequently re-created in 2009 by John and Yoko's son Sean Lennon posing with his girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl, with male/female roles reversed (Sean clothed, Kemp naked), [16] and by Henry Bond and Sam Taylor-Wood in their YBA pastiche on October 26, 1993.

By the time she was 23 years old, Leibovitz had become the chief photographer for the magazine and had been given total artistic freedom to experiment with her work. In return she produced some of the publication's most iconic images, featuring the most influential musicians of the era, including The Rolling Stones, Elton John, and Bob Dylan. Her work for Rolling Stone introduced her to some of the most celebrated creative figures of the time, including the American photographic icon Richard Avedon. Avedon worked primarily as a fashion photographer and was notorious for avoiding relationships with other photographers, but he saw something in Leibovitz and the two became close, with the elder photographer taking on a mentorship role.
