The shots from the Picopresso taste (I must say) surprisingly great. They’re remarkably smooth and rich with a good amount of texture. My first impressions upon receiving the Picopresso was that it is incredibly well-made. Call me strange, but I was really digging the smell of the box upon opening it. I would compare it to “new car smell.” It comes with a tightly fitted carrying case, similar to those that hold musical instruments. The product itself is incredibly sturdy with well-made accessories. The Picopresso exclusively uses finely ground coffee to make barista-quality espresso shots– with a little work. It has a wide filter basket with an 18g double shot capacity and a bottomless portafilter for getting the absolutely best flavor from your ground coffee. All the steps are relatively straightforward. The difficulty is getting them consistently perfect but these are our tried and tested tips:

Weigh out 16 to 18 grams of espresso beans. If you don’t have a kitchen scale, you’re already behind, Francis. The good news is you can get one, and here’s the one I use. To assess your claim, you will be required to provide photo and/or video evidence of the damaged product. Slowly begin pumping the plunger at a steady pace, around once a second. You should feel a good amount of resistance, but it shouldn’t require more than one hand to pump. Stop when you have 40 grams of espresso in your cup. It should take about 30 seconds to pull your double shot.Before trying this espresso maker, I had yet to try outstanding shots from devices using this type of pump. But somehow, Wacaco can pull it off this time around. The Wacaco Picopresso is capable of pulling barista-quality espresso shots. But only if you use fresh, finely ground coffee. Nevertheless, that pressurized portafilter is also the reason that the espresso the Nanopresso produces won’t be as good as the Picopresso. Finally, the Nanopresso is less expensive than the Picopresso. However, if you want to brew double shots, the cost of the Barista Kit to do this will significantly reduce those savings. Ideal for both novices and seasoned baristas, the gauge is a very valuable teaching tool, helping you understand and refine your pumping technique. Explore the world of micro-pumping and achieve better stability in pressure, allowing for a more traditional brewing process.

The Flair Neo is a beginner-friendly lever espresso machine in a similar price range as the Picopresso. It uses a pressurized basket that ensures that you’ll get decent espresso regardless of your grind size. Remove the scoop from the inside of the basket and toss it aside because you will be freshly grinding your beans every time and weighing your coffee beans to the gram like good boys and girls (and not scooping willy nilly like some chimpanzee). Recycle the scoop. You won’t need it. I used the Wacaco Picopresso exclusively for a week to make my morning brew and tinkered with various coffee grind settings, coffee and water ratios, water temperatures, and brew times. I always follow the manufacturer’s instructions to a T on the first test, and then experiment to dial things in to get the best brew. We love the Nanopresso, and Wacaco has done a ground-breaking espresso maker again with the Picopresso. The coffee this little device produces is simply beautiful, while the well-thought-out design and excellent accessories make using the machine a pleasure.Ever wondered what your favourite coffee would taste like if it was brewed by a professional barista? Overall, the Flair Classic is still the better choice as a daily driver due to its more stationary design. Still, if you want some added travel flexibility, you should consider the Picopresso. Pros & Cons Even if you never take it out of your kitchen, you can easily spend 10 times as much on a machine for home use that occasionally requires costly repair and takes up significantly more counter space than the tiny Picopresso. As a pint-sized espresso maker, it’s unrivaled in its weight-to-quality ratio. In fact, I’d say it’s in a class of its own. If espresso is your caffeinated drink of choice and making coffee outside is your speed, I can wholeheartedly recommend giving the Picopresso a try. Each home brewer must master the art of manual espresso making by dialing in the correct grind size, tamping, and perfecting pulling technique – their reward; an authentic cafe-quality espresso that will rival any expensive high-end machine.
