I don't know if there is any particular problem with these Uppendahl prisms. Henry might know why they never gained popularity. There was a recent thread about them being used in Bausch & Lomb (I think - maybe Bushnell) binoculars and that some of them were phase coated and they were highly regarded. I think Renze commented on them. He owned one and took it apart if my memory is correct. I found that these old TRINOVIDs have less chromatic aberration than the newest LEICA TRINOVID 8×42 BN, and are as sharp in the center and sides.

When we first considered putting together this Zeiss SFL review, we didn’t really know what to expect. Zeiss Optics has made top notch binoculars, spotting scopes, rifles scopes and more for a long time, and every time a new product emerges, it’s easy to get excited. We wanted to see if they would keep their good reputation with their new Zeiss SFL binoculars, so we put them to the test.

Sadly, roof and porro prisms just can't compare. The Uppendahl prism system gives a longer optical path with less size and weight, which seems to be responsible for the smaller size, lighter weight and wider field of these original TRINOVIDs. optical quality is that these have subjectively some of the best resolution I’ve seen in small hand- helds. Using a prism based optical system, the 10x40 ' s size can be immediately reduced, eliminating a traditionally large objective lens and exceedingly long housing & eye-relief. The color fringes seen are artifacts caused by me making these photos from only 3 meters (10 feet) away, and thus seeing through the corners of each of the narrower fields of view of these higher-powered 10x40s. I'm not looking through their centers.Offers up to 4x wider field of view when compared to traditional sights and can focus down to a distance of 6m for close-range shooting.

The only way to find a lighter pair is to drop down to 25mm objectives, which is a much lower klasse of travel binocular. These 1960s TRINOVIDs were designed as the travel binocular for the LEICAMAN who will not accept reduced performance or lessened light-gathering ability in a small binocular.

The Leitz TRINOVID 10×40 are super-sharp, and what really says volumes about the quality is that this 52-year-old pair is still better collimated than most new binoculars! You can hold these a foot away from your face, and your two eyes still see the same thing. Try that with any other 52-year-old pair of binoculars (or any new pair of cheaper binoculars), and it won't happen. First, let’s look at how the Zeiss SFL10x30 binoculars performed next to the NL Pure 10x32s. It might seem ridiculous to put these side by side given the enormous price difference, but I’m sure glad that we did. As expected, the NL Pures were far superior in field of view (360 feet @1000 yards vs. 396ft @1000 yards), but were only slightly better in edge-to-edge clarity. There wasn’t nearly as much difference as I expected, and surprisingly the Zeiss SFL truly held its own in edge-to-edge clarity. The objective tubes are rounded off underneath the bridge and not flattened as they are on top. The tubes are tapered down from the objectives to the oculars. I do consider the Pentax ED's just below modern Alpha binoculars so really for 40 year old binocular the Leitz’s do hold up remarkably well which is tantamount to the original excellent optical and build qualities. People who talk about binoculars all day are always freaking out about brightness. Brightness is really just the light transmission, coupled with the exit pupil.
