Scottish crime novelist McDermid once again proves herself the consummate storyteller in this clever blending of history, mystery, verse, and vice…against the backdrop of England’s idyllic Lake District, McDermid renders a supremely satisfying tale in which matters of heart and mind are entwined. I was a bit sceptical about this at first, finding the little Wordsworth insertions a bit distracting.

The literary chase, which leaves a trail of unexplained dead bodies, is a fascinating one with a satisfying resolution. But the hints of other crimes Tempe’s identification uncovers, particularly crimes against children, spur her on to redouble her efforts despite the new M. Val has served as a judge for the Women’s Prize for Fiction and the Man Booker Prize, and was Chair of the Wellcome Book Prize in 2017. She believes that the Lakeland poet William Wordsworth, a friend of Christian’s, may have sheltered the fugitive and turned his tale into an epic poem – which has since disappeared. A 200 year old preserved peat body discovered in England's Lake District is covered with South Sea Tattoos of the sort that 18th century British seamen acquired during their travels throughout the far reaches of the British Empire.Then, in the last ten percent of the book, the murder victims start dropping like flies, and I had no idea who the murderer was (maybe because it wasn't a very plausible solution). As an added pleasure, much of the story is set in the grandeur of the Lake District, described with a poet’s eye. Oh, and as for the idea of a connection between Christian and Wordsworth, it seems that while the families did know each other and the boys were at the same school, there was a six-year age gap which at that time of life likely precludes them having much to do with each other. And, it's possible that there is an extant poem written by Wordsworth regarding his friend Fletcher.

River Wilde continues to evaluate the bog body, hoping that the tattoos - synonymous with eighteenth century sailors from the South Sea Islands – will eventually shed some light on his identity.

With a feminist, socially conscious spin, McDermid vividly contrasts marginal subsistence in London’s dismal Marshpool neighbourhood with the Lake District’s bucolic lifestyle…this could be McDermid’s breakout book. So when I saw this one at the library a few days ago, I knew I probably woudn't love it, but I wanted something not-too-weighty to get me through the weekend.
