Patience is forced to take on dead end jobs to try and make ends meet, but when waitressing doesn’t cover the bills, she turns to ripping off the local criminals that are ruining her neighbourhood dressed as Kick-Ass. So if Millar has something (or someone) of a similar calibre up his sleeve for this, then that could really step things up a gear.

Like Doctor Who, Spider-Man, or the Flash, the hope is that Patience takes inspiration from the character of Kick-Ass and what he stood for, and creates another aspect to that legacy by taking on the mantle and continuing the fight for justice. A more serious take on their green-and-yellow suited vigilante with the same bone-crushing action and exciting art. Kick-Ass seems like the equivalent of junk food for the brain, and whilst that sounds like a damning criticism, it's not meant to be; it's just an honest description of the way this story feels. I think it might be a new inker responsible for the cleaner images, but, honestly, no one actually notices the 'tracer' (don't hate me inkers, it's a Chasing Amy joke), so it might just be a different style for a different book by JRJr. It doesn't help that this issue spends so little time exploring her transition from soldier to vigilante, making it feel like a very abrupt and implausible development in her life.

This is a remarkable start to a series that is shockingly fresh despite revolving around a very basic premise. Don’t fool yourselves: the angular and blocky style remain, but it is far more subdued that what he delivered elsewhere (for a quick reference, take a look at DC´s recent “The Silencer”). Submissions should be for the purpose of informing or initiating a discussion, not just to entertain readers. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. And while Millar always pushed the boundaries in terms of insane violence and over-the-top moments, it retained that “this could actually happen” type of energy.The polish of the story may have been tarnished with the sequels and as such, the two co-creators, Millar and Romita JR have taken the wise step of starting over. I tired quickly of the several swooping Phoenix visuals, designed to convey the immense scope of its power, but that's really more of a failing of the script than Romita's storytelling.

As long as you have a balanced diet, there's no harm in occasionally snacking on something that might not be good for you, but is tasty whilst it lasts - and Kick-Ass serves that purpose perfectly well. Over at colors, Steigerwald clearly worked hand-in-hand with Millar and Romita, as much of the issue’s pace is reinforced by the choice of palette: the Afghanistan pasts sequences have very earthly notes, gradually shifting to lighter and brighter shades when Patience is with her family, to dark and dirty towards the end.In my own case, I now have a bunch of Kick-Ass trades to dive into and learn more about this universe. What it lacks in heart, energy, laughs, tone, pacing, and pretty much everything else, it makes up for with Jim Carrey. That only further divorces this book from reality and diminishes what should be one of its big selling points. Inker/colorist Peter Steigerwald does help add a darker, harsher coat to Romita's work, but that doesn't do much to make the blocky figures seem more grounded in reality.
